Is It Good?
Yeah, that’s the stuff right there. GREEN HORNET: ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK captures the mean, green, fighting spirit of the Green Hornet and introduces a formidable new villain all in one go. If you’re a fan of Green Hornet or simply a fan of gritty vigilante stories in general, there’s a lot to like in this issue.
What sets Green Hornet apart from other masked vigilantes is his unique hook. To the public, he maintains a reputation as a lethal crime boss. In other words, he fights crime from within the ranks of the criminal underworld, so the way he attacks problems has a built-in twist. Here, Denton takes full advantage of the twist by introducing a new villain, Snake, who tries to worsen the Green Hornet’s reputation before moving for the final kill. Not only does the hook change Green Hornet’s approach compared to a typical vigilante, but Denton also highlights how the hook changes the villain’s approach.
While the hook is unique and immediately sets Green Hornet apart from similar heroes, the climax of the issue puts a heavy emphasis on Green Hornet bluffing his way through a gangster meeting. Denton almost makes it work, but it’s hard not to think that at least one greedy gangster would take advantage of Green Hornet’s outnumbered situation to go for a power grab. Green Hornet’s bluff is a good bluff, but you have to choose to suspend a little disbelief to make it work.
Morales and Sutil nail the art execution in this one-shot with powerful-looking characters, gritty bare-knuckle brawls, and fantastic coloring.
