Is It Good?
That’s right. This series became one of our most favored because it’s a surreal version of John Wick, recast with anthropomorphic dogs in the starring roles. GOOD BOY (VOL. 3) #2 all but confirms the third volume in the series takes direct queues from John Wick: Chapter 2, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with how this issue turned out.
In issue #1, Garret Gunn and Christina Blanch’s story centered on the return of Grizzly Sparks after Flint sparks, Grizzly’s father, was kidnapped. Now we learn the identity of the kidnappers, the motivation behind the attack, and the life-or-death stakes for Flint’s entire family if a rescue is attempted.
To be fair, this volume isn’t a point-for-point remake of a John Wick film like the first volume, but the plot points and the parallels are unmistakable. The villain of the story, Annabel Vadicci, is ruthless, vindictive, and a little too close to crazy. You’re instantly intrigued with Vadicci as a villain because her motivations are clear, and the resources at her disposal make her incredibly dangerous for both the Flint family and the Guild. In short, Annabel Vadicci is a perfect villain.
In fairness, we don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves in the praise department. The first issue lays out Flint’s kidnapping, and this second issue lays out the backstory, so we’ll see how issue #3 ties it all together.
A big component of the charm of this series is Kit Wallis’s whip-smart, slightly black-humored, charming art. Characters project sly, nuanced emotions you could pick up from a mile away. The dramatic use of silhouettes and angles is masterful, and the wry bits of humor from Lentz’s lettering land every joke. Some readers may not connect with the comic strip character style, but we’re big fans.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Check out our GOOD BOY (VOL. 3) #1 review to find out how Flint Sparks was kidnapped.
We begin with a flashback to Flint sparks executing (*heh*) a hit on Paolo Vadicci. Paolo’s sister arrives on the scene too late and swears bloody vengeance for her brother’s death. Later, Ann Vadicci pays a visit to the Lincoln Hotel to plead for assistance in killing Flint Sparks as the instrument of her brother’s death. Mr. Winchester, the Guild’s hotel manager, politely refuses.
We conclude the issue with a request to speak to the manager’s manager, a killer dress, and going rogue.

GOOD BOY (VOL. 3) #2 unveils the mysterious villains and motivations behind Flint Sparks’s kidnapping with a direct homage to John Wick: Chapter 2 that honors the source material but adds a fresh spin to the story. The writing is razor-sharp and entertaining, and the art is deceptively complex.
