Is It Good?
GOOD BOY (VOL. 2) #3 is a better-than-solid entry in the second arc as the action takes a backseat to strong character-building and setup for the big showdown to come. Every moment in this issue is geared toward endearing this ragtag group of mercenaries to the reading audience, and on that point, this issue succeeds spectacularly.
If you’re new to this title, the main characters are dogs. That’s right. Dogs. Yet, Gunn and Blanch infuse oodles of humanity, emotion, and camaraderie into each character’s personality and their interactions. Despite their gruff exterior and superhuman skills at killing, each mercenary has a charming quirk about them that makes you want to pull up a chair and have a beer with them on a warm summer day. They’re brothers in every way that matters, and Gunn and Blanch project that brotherhood loud and clear on every page.
The surprise in this issue is the introduction of a new character, Piper, who’s a cat. Up to now, all characters have either been humans or dogs, but the introduction of a cat suddenly opens up this world for more stories. On the surface, introducing a cat may seem like a small tweak to the world, but it’s a tweak with huge potential.
Wallis’ art excels at juxtaposing wild, cartoony action and character designs with heartfelt emotion and mature character acting. You feel like you’re watching The Dirty Dozen or The Expendables, but the cartoonish style doesn’t conflict with the content. It gives the content a surreal layer of humor that’s fascinating to read.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Catch up with the aftermath of Tucker’s attack on The Farm in our GOOD BOY (VOL. 2) #2 review.
We begin with Flint, Abraham, and the rest of Abraham’s mercenaries in a chopper, heading to meet an expert tracker and Reef’s ex-girlfriend, Piper. Reef isn’t happy about the meeting, but Abraham insists they get help from the best tracker around.
As the chopper makes its way to the meeting point, we get a flashback to the last time everyone fought on a mission with Tucker as part of the crew. Their night-time trash-talking sessions are endearing, and you can feel a genuine bond between all of them. When the crew heads out to take down an enemy compound, Tucker is uncharacteristically gung-ho and defies orders to charge in.
Now, the crew meets with Piper, and she gives everyone a lay of the land for Tucker’s seemingly-unapproachable compound. We conclude the issue with casualties, impossible odds, and a favor called in.

Final Thoughts

GOOD BOY (VOL. 2) #3 takes a slight breather from the action to flesh out the old characters, introduce new ones, and move all the players in place for what promises to be an epic showdown. The writing is heartfelt in the best way a brothers-in-arms story can be, and Walis’s art adds unexpected whimsy and emotion in the unlikeliest of places.

John Wich’s age is never formally stated in the film, so presumably, John Wick is the same age as Keanu Reeves who was 49 when the first film was released. However, the original script for the first John Wick film called for the character to be 75 years old.
