Was It Good?
GOOD BOY (VOL. 2) #1 is dope as #$%&. That’s all you need to know, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t give you the full scoop.
Picking up from the supremely entertaining first volume, GOOD BOY (VOL. 2) #1 doesn’t continue the cinematic adventures of John Wick in dog form but instead takes the story in a new direction. We enjoyed the first volume so much because it was almost a direct copy of John Wick (2014) with a dog for a lead, and it handled the material with the same slick, ferocious action that made the film such a success. Changing the lead into an anthropomorphic dog simply added a surreal icing to the cake.
Now, we get to see the creators stretch their creative chops by moving the story in a revised direction by creating a co-lead character, Abraham, that’s as ferocious and well-trained as Flint Sparks. A character who’s built a secluded village for the retired assassins of the world to leave their old lives behind. I can’t emphasize enough how completely badass this issue turned out. Abraham is every bit as accomplished as Flint Sparks, and it’s an action lover’s joy to watch how Abraham handles a deadly situation.
In fairness, if you’re looking for rich storytelling and deep pathos, this ain’t it. This is pure eye candy action. There are no thought-provoking conversations or soulful scenes. Abraham is a killer who wants to be left alone, and when the opposition arrives, things get nasty very quickly. Also, in fairness, the sparse dialog does its job efficiently well, the pacing is practically perfect, and as far as setup issues to introduce a new character, it doesn’t get any better.
Since there is little dialog, most of the issue is carried on Wallis’s shoulders, and carry the weight Wallis does. Every panel pops with drama. The action scenes are beautifully choreographed. And the word that keeps coming to mind to describe the visuals is “cinematic.”

What’s It About?

If you’d like a taste of the action greatness, check out our review from the first volume of GOOD BOY.
We begin with a paramilitary team invasion of a records facility. The guards are quickly and permanently dispatched, and the team finds what they’re looking for – files about a facility called The Farm.
Later, we’re introduced to Abraham, a dog who hikes the hills and forests near his village as he considers how hard he’s worked to build a life of serenity. A life that leaves the evil he’s done in the past behind. Suddenly, Abraham receives an intruder alert. He sees a small squad of SUVs driven by the same paramilitary group in the prelude heading towards his village, The Farm.
We conclude the issue with chaos, killing, and the late arrival of a familiar face.

GOOD BOY (VOL. 2) #1 is the best possible way to follow up a successful first volume. New characters and new settings are introduced through pure action frenzy, and it’s a joy to behold. Not a single word or bullet is wasted, the choreography is glorious, and you couldn’t hope for a better character introduction in a single issue.
