Was It Good?

GOOD BOY #3 finishes off the volume with more knife-wielding, shooting, bare-knuckled action than you can shake a stick at and yell “FETCH!”

It’s difficult to properly review this comic because this is one of those rare circumstances where the comic is adapting an existing property (in this case, John Wick) almost identically. But by making one, small tweak, this story turns into something that completely stands on its own.

Another way to view it is that Good Boy thoroughly entertains you by capturing all the moves, the tone, the drama, and the heart essence of what makes John Wick such a great film franchise but it doesn’t feel like an inferior copy. Although all the beats, action sequences, and settings are nearly identical, Good Boy plays out like an homage that respects the source material rather than simply trying to copy it. For the most part, it lives up to the legend.

There is some dialog in this issue, however, the last entry in the volume is nearly all action. Wallis’s art style is a large reason why this issue (and the volume as a whole) works so well. The fun scenes are brutal, tense, and brimming with energy. Also, Wallis peppers in small hits of black humor, especially when thugs die or get horribly maimed. There’s a slick patina of badassery in the art that, again, pays homage to the source material without trying to cheaply clone it.

What’s It About?

If you don’t recall where we last left Flint, first read out GOOD BOY #2 review.

We begin with Flint cornered by two of his pursuers. Despite the deluge of gunfire, knife throwing, and bazooka blasts (???). Flint stands victorious and has a lead in his search for his human’s killer.

Next, Flint heads to a seedy strip club to cash in a few coins for information about who hired his latest opponents. The information comes at a cost, but his coins may not be enough to overcome old grudges.

Finally, Flint makes his way to the boss hideout where the hit on his human was issued. We conclude the issue with more shooting, maiming, and killing than you thought possible in a single comic.

Final Thoughts

GOOD BOY #3 is everything you never knew you wanted in a film adaptation that isn’t technically a film adaptation. The writing is tight as a drum, the action is more dynamic than a bazooka blast, and the material takes itself, the source material, and the readers time seriously while infusing just enough black humor to make to help this adaptation stand on its own.

Score: 9.5/10
