Is G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO #305 Good?

In the previous issue, Dawn Moreno worked with Duke and the Joe’s back at the Pit to gather information. She encountered cybernetically enhanced Vipers spying on Cobra Commander. There was a confrontation, leading to the Viper soldiers self-destructing. Meanwhile, Serpentor observed everything, sending more enhanced Vipers to Camp Greer to infiltrate the Pit. Cobra Commander and Duke became aware of the spying activities.

In this issue, Dawn returns home and contacts Duke, informing him of the encounter. Spirit and others monitor the Vipers at Camp Greer, while Serpentor observes through their electronic eyes. Despite suspicions arising, Serpentor’s manipulations continue, with Destro, the Baroness, and Zartan forming alliances, unbeknownst that the latter is a decoy sent by Serpentor.

If you’re wondering where this series within Skybound’s interconnected Energon Universe, it doesn’t. The series exists in its own space, separate from the Transformers universe, serving as a continuation of the original G.I. Joe series.

What did we like about G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO #305?

The issue excels in portraying the intricacies of military operations, showcasing Larry Hama’s profound knowledge of military jargon and tactics. Each character feels authentic, with their unique skills and personalities shining through. Hama’s writing provides a sense of authenticity to the G.I. Joe universe, immersing readers in a world where strategic thinking and covert operations are paramount. Serpentor’s masterful manipulation adds layers to the narrative, keeping readers engaged as they unravel the complexities of his plans.

What didn’t we like about G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO #305?

While the issue showcases Hama’s skill in crafting intricate plots, it does suffer from pacing issues. At times, the story feels like it’s treading water, with significant developments taking a backseat to setup and exposition. The focus on positioning and strategizing, while essential for building tension, may leave some readers craving more immediate action. Additionally, the lack of clear direction in certain scenes can make the narrative feel disjointed, detracting from the overall impact of the story. While the issue sets the stage for future conflicts, it could benefit from a tighter narrative structure to maintain momentum and keep readers fully invested in the unfolding drama.

How’s the Art?

Chris Mooneyham’s artwork excels, portraying dramatic scenes with detailed character designs and moody atmosphere, reminiscent of classic military stories.
