First Impressions:

Plot Analysis:

Dawn’s squad barrels through Springfield with Cobra and M.A.R.S. forces closing in, making a frenzied run for the main road only to find their escape blocked. When the straightforward escape fails, the Joes improvise, flipping the missile launcher and firing backwards at their pursuers, clearing a frantic path toward a secret airfield just outside of town. Racing through fire, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, and Dawn have to hijack a Cobra A.S.P.I.D. helicopter—thanks mostly to Jinx’s questionable “flight sim” credentials—to blast out of the trap while enemy vehicles swarm from every direction.

On Cobra Island, Wet-Suit and Helix dodge annihilation in a commandeered Cobra Scorpion, barely staying ahead of heavy fire while the plan to escape by rubber raft is scuttled. Radio calls crackle across the ocean, and back in the Pit, Duke orders air support, prepping the Sky-Striker with Ace at the controls and setting up a dramatic midair rendezvous as the Joes’ survival comes down to inches and seconds. Explosions and last-minute dogfights litter the sky as the recon team runs out of ammo, gets pinned to the docks by Blue Ninjas wielding energy sabers, and scrambles for yet another stolen vehicle—a Moray hydrofoil, rocketing out to sea with only minimal hope.

Springfield’s defenders scramble as well, rolling out vehicles and helicopters from under camo netting and shouting frantic commands in hopes of finally bottling up the Joes. Just as all seems lost, the cavalry arrives: Sky-Striker jets scream overhead, unleashing enough chaos to let the Joes break out. In the aftermath, battered heroes regroup for yet another round of weapons training, while cryptic hints set the stage for the next wild chapter.

Story

Larry Hama’s script is relentless, bouncing squads between overlapping crises with barely a pause for punctuation. Dialogue comes fast, peppered with snappy barks and the occasional gallows joke, while action dominates almost every page. The pacing is kinetic, bordering on breathless, with little room for the quieter moments or character beats that gave the series its classic edge.

Art

Paul Pelletier’s pencils charge through the panels with clean lines and a sharp sense of movement. Every explosion, dogfight, and desperate last stand bursts with energy. Tony Kordos’ inks add weight and detail, while Francesco Segala’s colors keep the chaos legible even in cluttered battle scenes. This issue gives the spotlight to Dawn, Jinx, Scarlett, Wet-Suit, Helix, and the ever-resilient Snake Eyes, each forced into problem-solving under fire.
