Analysis of G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO #319:

First Impressions:

This issue is a whirlwind of a ride. The art and colors are fantastic, and the story moves at a breakneck speed, leaving you breathless. It’s a fun and exciting issue that truly makes you feel like you’re in the middle of the battle.

Recap:

In the previous issue, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #318, the story focused on multiple concurrent missions. Duke, Black Hat, Stalker, and Mainframe were monitoring and providing support from the Pit. Storm Shadow and Dawn were fighting their way through the storm drains of Springfield, collecting intel on Cobra. Multo and Helix had disguised themselves to infiltrate Dr. Mindbender’s lab inside the Cobra Island casino to investigate Revanche’s sleeper agents. Meanwhile, in Scotland, Cobra Commander was making his escape, unaware that his movements were being monitored.

Plot Analysis:

In Springfield, Storm Shadow and Dawn navigate the city’s flooded storm drains, gathering intel to transmit back to the Pit. They are surprised by an attack from Cobra Techno-Vipers, who mistake them for Enhanced Mutants. Meanwhile, in Scotland, Cobra Commander is on the run in a beat-up car with a Scottish driver, being chased by the local police. He’s desperate to escape, but his driver informs him the brakes are shot, leading to a frantic and reckless getaway.

A battle rages in the Cobra Island casino, where Serpentor’s clone is being moved in a cryogenic container. The Joes, including Multo and Helix, are inside the shielded casino and have no way of communicating with their teammates on the outside. Elsewhere, other G.I. Joe operatives are watching the casino from a distance, but a Cobra drone finds them, forcing them to shoot it down.

The Joes on the outside are trying to warn Multo and Helix but are ambushed by Cobra forces. Simultaneously, the Joes in the Pit are monitoring the situations in both Springfield and on Cobra Island, but they’re unable to help directly. Cobra Commander’s driver crashes the car in Scotland, and the Joes, led by Stalker, manage to secure the commander, but not before a brief struggle ensues.

Story

Larry Hama is a master of the craft. His ability to weave together multiple ongoing plots without making the reader feel lost is a testament to his skill. The dialogue feels natural and adds to the characterization without being overly expository. The comic is packed with action and plot development but still manages to have subtle moments that show the relationships between the characters. The pace is incredibly fast, and there isn’t a dull moment in the entire issue. It’s a very tightly written comic.

Art

Paul Pelletier’s pencils, combined with Tony Kordos’ inking and Francesco Segala’s colors, create a vibrant and action-packed world. The characters are expressive, and the action sequences are dynamic and easy to follow. The colors are bright and bold, but they don’t overpower the pencils; they complement the art perfectly. The art team does an incredible job of making this book feel modern while still retaining the classic G.I. Joe feel.

Positives

This issue does a great job of moving the various plotlines forward. The action is constant and engaging, and the dialogue is sharp. The art is superb, giving the book a dynamic feel. The creative team knows how to tell a story that feels both classic and new at the same time. The ending of this book will have readers anxiously waiting for the next one

Negatives

There aren’t many negatives to be found, but the biggest one is that the issue is so action packed that sometimes there isn’t enough time to process everything happening. While the fast pace is a strength, it can also be a weakness, leaving some of the quieter character moments feeling a little rushed.
