Is It Good?
GARGOYLES #8 is a perfectly serviceable issue that gives readers background information on two of the lesser-known Gargoyles, a little bit of quick action, and a small step forward in the brewing gang war. Depending on how much or little you prefer those three parts, this issue may be a mixed bag or a winner depending on your point of view.
When last we left the Gargoyles, Lex and Broadway saved Slaughter from a fleet of attack drones designed to make Slaughter think he was the target of a rival gang. Now, Slaughter’s review of the wreckage leads him to believe something’s fishy, Coldfirereminisces about how she became the robotic gargoyles she is today, and The Pack breaks into prison for an assassination (not Goliath’s).
What’s great about this comic? If you’re not as acquainted with Coldfire, this issue makes for a great primer on her history, including how she came to be housed in a robotic body. Slaughter’s realization that the drone attack isn’t what it seems created an interesting twist on the arc’s plot. And The Pack attack is a nice cameo.
What’s not so great about this comic? If you’re already familiar with Coldfire and her backstory, you’ll get nothing new in this issue. The Pack attack happens too quickly before it ends, and it seemed to serve no purpose other than to let Tony know his family doesn’t really care about him. Also, Slaughter’s realization about the drone attack only moves the arc’s plot forward a few baby steps.
In a roundabout way, the positives could also be the negatives, depending on your point of view.
How’s the art? George Kambadais’s art is fine in this issue, or at least good enough for a cartoon adaptation. Kambadais’s choice of using a fisheye lens perspective pops up in a big way, and the coloring looks sloppily applied in spots, but the art is generally okay.

What’s It About?

Check out our GARGOYLES #7 review to find out how Lex and Broadway saved Slaughter’s life.
We begin with Coldfire pontificating on the nature of time, how living beings perceive it, and how she views it differently now that she inhabits a robotic body. Throughout the issue, Coldfire recalls what her life was like on Wyvern Hill and how much her life has changed since then.
Elsewhere, Slaughter’s crew collects pieces of wreckage from the drone attack. They learn the drones and remote control were meant to get them to believe the attack was coordinated by a rival gang, but the tech used tells a different story.
Meanwhile, The Pack breaks into prison to kill Tomas Brod. We conclude the issue with more revelations, a prison break, and a hearing.

Final Thoughts

GARGOYLES #8 delivers a mix of Coldfire backstory, a discovery that puts the gang war plan in jeopardy, and an unwelcome visit from an old enemy. The arc’s plot doesn’t move forward enough to keep the momentum up, but Coldfire’s flashbacks make for a good primer on the character. The art ranges from fine to serviceable.
