Is It Good?
GARGOYLES #2 is a solid entry in the reinvigorated series with the unveiling of key villains and a ticking clock in the form of Maggie the Cat’s pending birth. That said, issue #2 is mildly weaker than issue #1 in both the writing and the art. Let’s get into it.
The big positive is the return of long-standing Gargoyles villains Xanatos and the Dracon family. Of course, series writer Weisman knows these baddies inside and out, so they’re played to perfection. Any readers hankering for a new story while referring to what made the original stories so great are in for a treat.
However, there’s a lot going on in this issue by way of new/old character introductions and setup, even more than in the first issue. It’s a lot to take in, and none of the scenes are given much page space to develop fully, so the issue feels rushed (not incomplete). If you’re a legacy Gargoyles fan, you’ll relate to all the characters pretty quickly, but if you’re a new reader, you may find yourself getting lost in spots.
As for the art, some of the concerns we say in Kambadais’s turn on John Carter are repeated here. Some panels don’t look fully complete, character proportions occasionally look distorted, and the backgrounds are almost entirely lacking in detail. On the whole, Kambadais’s work here is far better than what we saw in John Carter, but the quality takes a noticeable dip between issues #1 and #2.

Check out our GARGOYLES #1 review to find out how when the series picks up after the cartoon.
We begin with Angela narrating the current state of the Gargoyles as the clan waits for a new egg to hatch. Soon, Goliath receives a message that Maggie the Cat is due to give birth, and he has a chance to be present if he hurries.
When Goliath and the others arrive at the mutate’s lair, they find Maggie is gone, and the others present are unconscious from knockout gas. When the unconscious come around, they recount how a shadowy group barged in and took Maggie.
Meanwhile, the Dracon family prepares for options when they learn Tony is set to be released from prison. We conclude the issue with a furious father, a prison visit, and forced cooperation.

Final Thoughts

GARGOYLES #2 is a solid issue in the series that brings back familiar villains and raises the stakes. That said, Weisman tries to do a little too much, leaving you with a rushed feeling, and the art quality dips here compared to the previous issue.
