Is FUNG GI #1 Good?
FUNG GI #1 visits feudal Japan where a lone warrior and his overly chatty sidekick are on a quest for enlightenment and to make peace with the world. They encounter a fellow person who is captured by slavers and is trying to make her way back to her clan, which has been attacked. The warrior, convinced by his chatty sidekick, decides to intervene and help her out, forming a little group along the way.
They encounter thieves, mercenaries, and assassins, traversing through foggy ravines and climbing hills and mountains. It’s filled with honor, brutality, martial arts action, and tense moments. But here’s the twist—all the people are mushrooms in various forms, shapes, and sizes.
The concept of mushrooms as martial artists in a feudal Japanese setting is unique and imaginative. The world-building incorporates not only mushroom people but also giant insects and an eclectic mix of fantasy elements.

What did we like about FUNG GI #1?
The concept is original, blending a standard medieval Japanese story with a fantasy twist of mushroom characters. The execution of the plot is intriguing, with mysteries and intriguing character dynamics. The personality and characters, particularly the stoic but deadly-focused lone warrior, are engaging.
What didn’t we like about FUNG GI #1?
The dialogue, while good, feels stiff, lacking in emotional depth and natural flow. The characters seem to talk at each other rather than with each other, possibly due to constraints in expressing emotion with mushroom heads. This stiffness detracts from the immersion in the story.
How’s the Art?
The art effectively brings the imaginative world to life, with character designs that make sense for the mushroom setting. However, some scenes feel a bit flat, lacking dynamic movement and energy. Overall, the art is solid, but there’s room for improvement in capturing action and facial expressions.

FUNG GI #1 presents an interesting concept with imaginative world-building and engaging character designs. The mystery surrounding the attacks on the protagonist’s village adds depth to the plot. However, the stiffness in dialogue and lack of facial expressions hinder the immersion in the story.
