Analysis of FRANKENSTEIN: NEW WORLD – THE SEA OF FOREVER #1:
Plot Analysis:
Frankenstein: New World – The Sea of Forever #1 begins after the previous miniseries with Frank and Lilja walking along the beach to find some way around the ocean on foot or a way to cross. Lilja has never seen an ocean before, and the two travelers decide to name it the Sea of Forever for its endless horizon.
The travelers eventually encounter two lizard people of the Hoshin Tribe unloading a fishing boat. Frank uses Vril energy to translate their language and assure them he and Lilja mean no harm. The apprehensive Hoshin soon accepts Frank’s words and engages in polite conversation. Frank asks if he can take one of their fishing boats in trade, but the Hoshin refuse, explaining that they have a special relationship with the Korinda sea creatures that require sacred care of their boats. However, they’re willing to teach Frank how to make a boat, an offer he gladly accepts.
Later, Frank and Lilja set sail to cross the Sea of Forever. When the Sun sets, their boat is attacked by flying lizards. During the desperate fight, Frank has a vision about the downfall of humanity and the origin of the vampiric Murk that follows them. The fight ends when the Sun rises, killing the flying lizards as sunlight kills a vampire.
Unfortunately, the battle destroyed Frank’s boat, stranding Frank and Lilja on uncharted shores.
First Impressions:
Frankenstein: New World – The Sea of Forever #1 is a strange, weird, and captivating fantasy tale. Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden, Thomas Sniegoski’s debut issue in the miniseries reads more like a whimsical fairytale than a horror story, but the content is no less attention-grabbing. The arc is off to a strong start.
Artwork and Presentation:
Peter Bergting’s Mignola-inspired art style is a pitch-perfect match for the script. Bergting leans on subtle gestures and nuanced movements to capture two peaceful travelers confronting an uncertain and sometimes dangerous world. The character designs, the backgrounds, and the monsters look fantastic.

Story Positives & Negatives:
The Positives:
Frankenstein: New World – The Sea of Forever #1 is a surprise, which is (almost) always a positive. The writing team’s fanciful script has the classic monster at the heart of the story, but the plot reads more like a LitRPG tale, which sets it apart from traditional takes on Frankenstein.
The Negatives:
For new readers picking up this story cold, you may be a bit lost on the background of Frank and Lilja’s relationship, where they’re going, and why. It would have helped to include a preface page with more detail to explain Frank’s history to this point.
Final Thoughts:

FRANKENSTEIN: NEW WORLD – THE SEA OF FOREVER #1 begins a new arc in the classic monster’s life story when he accompanies Lilja to fulfill her personal quest. The writing team’s whimsical script surprises by capturing the tone and atmosphere of an engaging fantasy, and Peter Bergting’s Mignola-inspired artwork is first-rate. That said, new readers may want to check out the previous arcs instead of going in cold.
