Is EXORCISTS NEVER DIE #6 Good?

Steve Orlando ends the series with EXORCISTS NEVER DIE #6 in an exciting yet predictable finale that’s heavy on action. We’ve praised Orlando’s story because it served as a clever allegory for the trials and tribulations of two people who examine what went wrong in their romantic relationship. The finale wraps up the story part, but the allegory part takes a backseat.

When last we left Syd and El, their descent into the Hellscraper took a nasty turn when confronted with the Deadly Sin demon, Envy. The exorcists defeated Envy and found a new respect for each other when they were forced to confront their own shortcomings. Now, the duo tussles with Pride before moving on to the main event and the Soul Auction’s surprising organizer (it’s not Wrath).

Yes, that’s right. Wrath doesn’t make an appearance. That may have been the plan all along, or Orlando simply ran out of time in plotting the series. Either way, there are elements of this comic that definitely feel like a sprint to the finish with standard fights instead of the thoughtful layers we’ve noted in the previous issues.

What’s great about EXORCISTS NEVER DIE #6? Syd and El save the day. Once the duo reaches the heart of the auction, you get an intimidating view of what’s at stake and who has to be defeated to save the day. Orlando makes the most of an action-packed finale.

What’s not so great about EXORCISTS NEVER DIE #6? Again, the finale turns into a predictable big fight to beat the big boss type of ending. The subtext and layers that allowed Syd and El to learn from each other as they fight each Deadly Sin is almost entirely absent. In short, the twist that made this series unique is missing when it was needed the most.

How’s the art? Sebastián Píriz lets loose with one wow moment after the next when the battle heats up and doesn’t stop until the final blow. Even the last page’s imagery is impressive. You could fault Orlando for inconsistency, but Sebastián Píriz’s art has been a consistent selling point since the beginning.

What’s EXORCISTS NEVER DIE #6 About?

Check out our EXORCISTS NEVER DIE #5 review to find out how Syd and El handled Envy.

We catch up with Syd and El already in the middle of a fight with Pride. They encourage each other to stay humble, robbing Pride of any influence. The exorcists emphatically blow Pride away, opening the door to the Soul Auction.

Inside the main chamber, Syd and El discover the Soul Auction isn’t led by Wrath or any typical demon. The entity in charge is a Lord of Hell, and the children on the auction block are two out of hundreds waiting in cages to be sold next. Syd and El take stock, crack their knuckles, and get to work.

We conclude the issue with duplication, sacrifice, and unfinished business.

Final Thoughts

EXORCISTS NEVER DIE #6 concludes the thought-provoking mini-series with big fights, big saves, and a predictable finish. The ending gets the job done, but the unique, meta twist is absent, and Píriz’s art is excellent.

Score: 7/10
