Is EDIE #1 Good?
We love horror, so when Blood Moon announced a new series in the sci-fi subset of horror, we immediately got on board. In EDIE #1, Paul Catalanotto kicks off a classic creature feature of blob-ish proportions with High School drama, teenager angst, and strange goo that’s sure to make more than one kind of mess.
Catalanotto’s script centers on a shy High School girl, Edie, and her classmate, Taylor, as they deal with the trials of not being the popular kids in High School. When an invitation to a party turns out badly, Edie finds herself alone in the woods, where she accidentally makes contact with the residue from a meteor shower. It only gets more gross from there.
Horror aficionados will probably catch all the references right away. It’s The Blob with a twist. In this case, Edie and The Blob merge to become a destructive force with an unstoppable appetite, so the story feels familiar, but the twist is unique enough to help the story stand on its own.
As a forewarning, there’s a scene involving sexual assault that may upset some readers. The assault isn’t explicit or shown in graphic detail, but readers sensitive to such topics should align their expectations accordingly.
What’s great about EDIE #1? Fans of classic drive-in-style creature features will probably get a kick out of where this series is headed. Catalanotto does a fine job setting up all the classic archetypes, from jocks to bullies to mean girls and everyone in between. When the monsterish elements appear, you know what’s coming, but there’s a strong sense of anticipation in seeing how the jerks get what’s coming to them.
What’s not so great about EDIE #1? If not for the twist of merging Eide with The Blob, this story would be a predictable cliché from front to back. If you’re a horror film fan, you could almost play out the rest of the series from memory. In fairness, the following issue could turn in surprising directions, but this first issue is (almost) as predictable as it gets.
How’s the art? Woronchak and Good deliver an above-average comic from the indie scene, with good figure work, great colors, and ooey gooey goodness when the Blob scenes show up.

What’s EDIE #1 About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with Edie getting up in the morning with flu-like symptoms. Her room is smattered with bright green goo that could be mucus, but there’s too much of it to be normal. Edie tries to eat some food, but she can’t keep any of it down. When Edie runs to the bathroom to vomit, the green goo on her hands moves on its own to snatch a fly out of the air.
Days earlier, Edie struggled to stay focused and engaged in school as she grappled with her feelings over her parents’ marital problems. Edie’s friend, Taylor, tries to get Edie to cheer up, but Taylor warns Edie to stay away from the popular but mean kids at school. Unfortunately, Edie has her eyes set on football player Brice. Edie is shocked when Brice invites Edie and Taylor to a party, but Taylor is annoyed by the potential for trouble.
We conclude the issue with lies of omission, a bad drink, and the wrong place at the wrong time.

Final Thoughts

EDIE #1 homages classic drive-in creature features when Edie gets invited to a party and winds up becoming the host of voracious green goo from outer space. Catalanotto does a fine job setting up all the expected archetypes of jocks, bullies, and mean girls just waiting to get what’s coming to them, but the story is almost too close to a Blob story to feel wholly original.
