Is EDENFROST #3 Good?
In the last issue, Yuli and Alex were on the run after their village was destroyed. They found a little cabin in the woods, home to a reclusive woman named Ms. Chernovil. Turns out, she used to be a general’s mistress and has been waiting, completely cut off from the world. She didn’t even know about the Russian Revolution, the fall of the Tsar, and the Romanovs being killed. It’s clear she’s been out there so long, she’s lost touch with reality. Julie and Alex try to convince her to let them stay for the winter, offering to help out. But Ms. Chernovil’s growing instability makes them realize escaping might be a better plan.
In EDENFROST #3, Alex and Yuli are trying to sneak away while Ms. Chernovil is passed out from drinking. But trouble finds them – the soldier they encountered in the last issue is back! He was wounded when Revolutionaries raided his camp, and now he’s leading them all to Ms. Chernovil’s cabin. The soldiers break in, and Ms. Chernovil tries to scare them off, but the Revolutionary leader just taunts her. He breaks the news about the Revolution and how the Tsar and Romanovs are dead, implying her general is probably gone too. Ms. Chernovi loses it, points her shotgun at them, and… she gets shot dead. The soldiers try to take Alex and Yuli alive, leading to a brutal fight.
Things get worse when Julie witnesses Ms. Chernovil’s violent death. In the chaos, the little trinket Alex wears around his neck falls off. A voice whispers to Yuli, promising power if she forms a blood pact. Desperate to protect her family, she uses her own blood and the fallen trinket to summon something extraordinary. It’s not a traditional Golem, but a massive, fiery, wolf-shaped creature! The issue ends with this fiery beast facing off against the injured, but still dangerous, Revolutionary leader.
This issue taps into Jewish mythology and Eastern European folklore, specifically about Golems. The traditional idea of a Golem is a protector of those of its bloodline, but the way it’s summoned here is a bit more dramatic than usual – perfect for a comic book! If you’re into the whole Golem concept, there are tons of fascinating stories and even some classic horror movies about them.
What we liked about Edenfrost #3
This issue has excellent pacing and a ton of gripping drama. When Julie summons the monstrous wolf creature, it’s a full-on, powerful moment, visually stunning, and sure to leave you wanting more. Also, just a heads-up, this issue is labeled mature due to violence and strong language. Even though the characters have that larger-than-life manga style, things get pretty intense.
What we didn’t like about Edenfrost #3
Honestly, there’s not much I disliked about this one. The story’s moving at a great pace, and I’m genuinely curious about what happens in the finale. One thing to note: this series relies on the reader knowing some Russian history. If you’re not familiar with the Revolution, the Romanovs, etc., some plot points might not hit as hard. A quick search on the Russian Revolution could be helpful!
Art Quality
I haven’t mentioned this yet, but the art is phenomenal. Bruno Frenda’s style is beautiful – great colors, expressive lines, and tons of detail. It’s a visually stunning comic.
