Is It Good?

DRAGON WHISPERER (VOL. 2) #4 does one thing every comic series should consider doing at least once within the context of an arc – evolve. De Luca makes the wise choice to evolve Rosalinda in an admittedly esoteric direction, so it remains to be seen how her change affects the remaining issues, but at the very least, the new twist is interesting.

The highlight of this issue is De Luca’s success in distilling a complex topic (How do you “talk” to Time?) into a digestible plot point that makes sense for the story and the character. Stretching a story beyond three dimensions is rarely an easy task, so the way De Luca makes it work with Fernandez’s crystal clear visuals makes it easy to accept the idea.

The minor down point is the odd transition from the previous issue into this one during Rosalinda’s conversation with Time. The conversation and Time’s manifestation as a weird centipede come out of nowhere with no pretext in the previous issue, and rather than explaining it here, the scene just keeps going. It almost feels as if a few panels were missing in between issues.

Fernandez’s art style is excellent in this issue. Weird, whimsical creatures suit De Luca’s story to a tee, and Fernandez’s super clean linework and vibrant colors bring the creatures to life.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

Read our DRAGON WHISPERER (VOL. 2) #3 review to find out how Rosalinda meets Time.

We begin with Rosalinda in her conversation with a large, sentient centipede-like creature who represents Time. It explains it’s never met anyone who can talk with it before and is fascinated by Rosalinda’s talent. It also divulges that Rosalinda’s talent should be able to let her talk to the elements, although they may not always answer.

As Time explains how it sees our past, present, and future, Rosalinda sees the group of monk assassins arrive to capture her and her friends. Rosalinda leaves the time bubble to join the fight, but the monks’ skill is too much. Before Rosalinda’s captured, however, she puts her talent to use by asking the sand to help her defeat an attacker.

We conclude the issue with a reveal about one of Rosalinda’s friends, a betrayal, and a look at the last days of Obsidian’s fortress.

Final Thoughts

(Click this link 👇 to order this comic)

DRAGON WHISPERER (VOL. 2) #4 is a strong entry in the series with an unusual concept for Time, strong character developments, and a dramatic backup story that fills in the tragedy of Obsidian’s past. The transition between this issue and the previous one feels like a few panels are missing, which may feel confusing from the start, but the story catches up in a hurry.

Score: 7.5/10

Are dragons real or extinct?

No, dragons of fairytale legends were never real and did not go extinct. The magical dragons portrayed in media and books were created through imagination or were exaggerated misinterpretations of dinosaur fossil discoveries.
