Is It Good?

DON’T SPIT IN THE WIND #4 brings Stefano Casrdoselli’s surreal sci-fi horror story to a close with heart-wrenching drama, big developments, and a whole trash heap’s worth of thought-provoking ideas. The open-ended conclusion may leave readers wanting a little too much, but sometimes the best endings are left to the imagination.

When last we left Travis and his friends, they were under assault by the Cult of Trash, the trash monster evolved into the shape of a giant flying angler fish, and the last pocket of humanity orbiting in space was about to lose orbit. Now, the cult gets an up-close look at a real god, the decadent space station takes its final bow, and lovers say goodbye… but possibly not for long.

At the risk of sounding pompous, Stefano Cardoselli’s finale is an intellectual conclusion because it corners the readers into thinking about possibilities and priorities. Why go through the trouble of creating a space station to escape a dying Earth when all the problems that created that destruction still live within the people? Why give trash more attention than the people who created it when you risk giving the trash a life of its own? Is life worth living when love is gone?

You develop entire university courses on philosophy on just one of those questions, so to say this comic gives you a lot to think about would be an understatement.

For some, the down point is the lack of a definitive ending. Without spoiling it, it appears all hope is lost on Earth, but possibly not, so you take away what you choose to, based on the last panel. Therefore, the openness of the last panel undercuts the satisfaction of Cardoselli’s conclusion.

How’s the art? Admittedly, Cardoselli’s exaggerated, underground style is not everyone’s cup of tea, but it matches the story’s vision to a tee. Cardoselli’s exaggeration can occasionally lead to a lack of visual clarity, but Dan Lee’s astoundingly detailed colors elevate Cardoselli’s style significantly.

Check out our DON’T SPIT IN THE WIND #3 review to find out how Travis and his friends got cornered.

We begin with the cliffhanger from issue #3. Travis and his surviving friends are surrounded by the Cult of Trash outside the Carcace building. The cult is determined to capture them for a blood sacrifice, but Travis and friends dash to the Carcace building for help and refuge.

In orbit, the Hope station begins its accelerating fall from orbit. The President is urged to make a statement, but he remains quiet, only opening his mouth to eat more cake. Elsewhere, the flying trash monster moves toward a nearby pocket of activity to declare its place as the true god of humanity.

We conclude the issue with faith against faith, a cascade, and low fuel.

Final Thoughts

(Click this link 👇 to order this comic)

DON’T SPIT IN THE WIND #4 ends the mini-series with deep, thought-provoking ideas about the purpose of life in all its forms. Cardoselli’s story about the end of life as we know it takes on multiple layers of meaning, and the open-ending gives readers much (too much?) to think about.

Score: 8.5/10
