Is It Good?

DON’T SPIT IN THE WIND #3 commences the penultimate issue in this limited series from Stefano Cardoslli, and if you’ve liked what you’ve read so far, this issue kicks the momentum up a notch for what promises to be a killer conclusion. If you think you’re having a bad day, Travis’s just got infinitely worse.

When last we left Travis and the Cacace Brothers clean up crew, part of the team was devoured by a toxic trash monster, another part of the crew was attacked by a homicidal cult bent on worshipping plastic (?), and Travis was about to get crushed by an unnatural swarm of locusts. Now, Travis (after being rescued) and Cassy seek out help while the cult approaches. Meanwhile, the space station riots spiral out of control.

The highlight of Cardoselli and Long’s script is the inescapable sense of growing momentum created by multiple story threads. The cult, the monster, and the uprising all convey a sense of moving toward some tragic outcome, but when put together, the momentum stacks and amplifies to generate the feeling that something big is about to happen. Whether or not Cardselli and Long can pay off the buildup remains to be seen, but this issue serves as an example of building momentum the right way.

That said, there are multiple threads going on which tend to make the comic feel a little crowded, especially since it’s not clear the threads are connected to each other in any specific way. That lack of connection puts added pressure on Cardoselli and Long to pay off the finale, but the crowded number of plot threads risks tipping too close to confusing.

Cardoselli’s highly-stylized art style looks great for what it is. If you like Cardoselli’s style, especially since this issue leans more into gore than the previous issues, you’ll like it here. If you’re not a fan, give it a chance to let it grow on you.

Check out our DON’T SPIT IN THE WIND #2 review to find out how Travis almost died from a locust swarm.

We begin with Travis waking up from a nightmare aboard Cassy’s ship. The series of catastrophes befalling the clean-up crew lead Travis to believe the Earth may not want humanity around anymore. Low on fuel, Cassy orders the ship to head back to base to refuel and get help to look for the rest of the crew.

When Cassy’s ship returns to base, she and Travis notice the area is unusually quiet. Suddenly, the death cult arrives, brandishing the heads of the missing crew on sticks. Determined not to become victims, Cassy and Travis fight the cult with all the weapons and armor at their disposal.

We conclude the issue with a dire warning, an angler taking flight, and reinforcements.
