Is It Good?

DON’T SPIT IN THE WIND #2 is weirdly interesting. Stefano Cardoselli’s scathing mashup of Wall-E and Dr. Strangelove continues Travis’s ill-fated trash cleanup mission with massive swarms of unstoppable locusts, an orbital city on the brink of class warfare, and a monster (???). Cardoselli delivers it all with a deadpan, caustic wit that will make you say “This isn’t real, but I could see it happening.”

When last we saw Travis and the cleanup crew, one of the collectors lost contact. When the crew left to investigate, they found the wayward collector horribly dismembered. Now, Travis’s troubles are just starting.

What makes a Cardoselli comic work is the unique blend of sharp cynicism and Cardoselli’s hyper-stylized art. Characters are exaggerated in a rough, gritty, lived-in appearance to give readers an impression that everyone is haggard or tired from living a hard life. Cardoselli’s art complements, as it should, the script wherein almost every character is tired, jaded, and cynical. It’s the contrast between tired cynicism and miraculous occurrences that gives the comic a layer of whimsy that’s fascinating to read.

How’s the art? Again, Cardoselli’s inks are super-stylized and exaggerated, which may not be to everyone’s liking, but the art matches Cardoselli’s writing style in a way that would be nearly impossible for another artist to reproduce. That said, Dan Lee’s colors give the comic a much-needed pop that enhances Cardoselli’s style for an attention-grabbing visual experience.

What’s It About?

Check out our DON’T SPIT IN THE WIND #1 review to find out how Travis got caught up in a swarm.

We begin with Travis desperately fighting off a massive swarm of locusts with his flamethrower. Unfortunately, there are more bugs than Travis has fuel, and he’s quickly swallowed up in a fluttering wave.

Elsewhere, one of the trash haulers encounters an odd man in the middle of the wasteland. Before they can move around the man blocking the path, an explosion rocks the hauler. The Garbage Priests intend to let nature take its course.

High above, humanity lives out a class-segregated existence in orbit, but what the lower classes don’t realize is that the excesses of the privileged are quickly consuming all resources. If starvation doesn’t kill everyone, a civil war will.

We conclude the issue with a monster.

DON’T SPIT IN THE WIND #2 continues Travis’s no-good, rotten, very bad day with crazy cults, giant monsters, and the threat of civil war. Carodselli’s unique approach to contrast through extremes leads to interesting visuals and caustically funny scenarios, and Dan Lee’s coloring packs an added punch.

Score: 8.5/10
