Is It Good?

DOCTOR WILDER #5ends the arc with a bang. Well, multiple bangs as Doctor Deja Wilder and her crew enact a risky plan to shut down the poaching operation and uncover the ringleaders’ hidden identities. As a finale, Hawkins and Giampà deliver the goods with plenty of puls-punding action, nailbiting suspense, and a satisfying conclusion.

The highlight of Hawkins’s script is its effective execution of the “All Hope Is Lost” moment. You truly believe that Deja and Kato are finished with no hope of escape or survival. By bringing readers down to the lowest point possible, Hawkins makes their eventual survival that much more satisfying.

In our reviews we evenly mix what works with what doesn’t to give you a balanced review. Here, there’s nothing that doesn’t outright work. At most, any down points are minor nitpicks and not worth mentioning. The pacing is excellent, Hawkins’s use of dialog is top-notch, the final confrontation feels big (as it should), and the prologue gives readers a reason to come back for more.

Giampà’s art with Rossi’s colors is gorgeously pristine. The line work is clean, sharp, and dynamic. Rossi’s colors are detailed and nuanced. And the overall visual experience is some of the best artwork from any small- or mid-size publisher.

Check out our DOCTOR WILDER #4 review to find out how Deja and Kato got nabbed.

We begin with Deja and Kato tied up and led to Mason Delvey for a distasteful gloat session. Mason is sure he’s won the day and wastes no time telling Deja the order of things in the world he’s helped to create.

Meanwhile, Macy runs surveillance on Leeland Walters after he received the ultimatum to expose his daughter’s past if he doesn’t turn over the poaching organization’s records. Leeland appears to be holding up his end until he makes a quick stop to pick up a passenger – the fourth ringleader. Leeland pleads for help but pays for his near-treachery with his life.

We conclude the issue with explosive escapes, deadly chases, and a mission unfinished.
