Is It Good?

What the…? File DOCTOR WHO: DOOM’S DAY #2 under “head scratchers” because this issue doesn’t make a lick of sense for one simple reason, it ends the story without finishing the story. It’s unclear if Jody Houser ran out of time or if this ending was always the plan, but this issue gives Seinfeld’s famous “it’s a story about nothing” line a whole new layer of credibility.

When last we left Missy (still posing as the Doctor), she crossed paths with the universe’s most deadly assassin, Doom, who intended to steal a world-destroying jewel AND find the Doctor as the only being who can stop her imminent death in 24 hours. Now, the chase continues to a convention themed after all things Earth and a desolate world to stop a madman from sending out doomsday weapons as a final act of remembrance for his people. When Missy heads off the dying man’s last wish (not really), the arc is over.

“What do you mean it’s over?” you rightly query. That’s right. It just ends. Missy doesn’t confiscate the world-destroying jewel from Doom, and Doom never meets the Doctor to be saved from Death. In effect, you get two issues that fill in part of Doom’s quest without the beginning or end. Why? It’s a bizarre mystery.

What’s great about this issue? Well, the cover is amusing, and Roberta Ingranata’s art is solid. To be fair, Houser does maintain an overall sense of intrigue at a decent pace to keep you wondering where the story is going.

What’s not so great about this issue? The story just ends without going anywhere, the repetitive bickering between Doom and Missy verges on silly when Missy insists she’s the Doctor when she clearly isn’t, and you learn practically nothing about Doom if you don’t read the preface page. Technically, this two-parter doesn’t even qualify as a story.

Check out our DOCTOR WHO: DOOM’S DAY #2 review to witness what happened when Missy and Doom first crossed paths.

We begin with Missy arriving at a convention in the future (for us), a convention designed to celebrate everything about Earth. Missy believes Doom will show up to find another dangerous device, and she’s right. Missy follows Doom to a kiosk that sells ancient Earth books. Through a confusing series of role reversals, a woman with gold tries to buy all the books from Doom, but Doom refuses, and the two tussle before Doom teleports away without whatever book she was looking for.

Missy tracks Doom to a dying planet with one inhabitant left. The man intends to send out probes containing shards of the world-destroying gem from a point in the future to burn as many worlds as possible in remembrance of his own world. Doom poisons the man with his own tea and destroys the probes.

The end???

Final Thoughts

DOCTOR WHO: DOOM’S DAY #2 is a confused jumble of scenes and ideas that don’t come together coherently, and the arc just ends. You don’t learn anything about Doom, her quest isn’t resolved, and Missy doesn’t recover the world-destroying jewel. What was the point?

Score: 4/10
