Was It Good?

Great action, zombies (just in time for Halloween), character development, and a twist ending. DJINN HUNTER #3 is turning out to be one of those series that meets or exceeds expectations with every issue so far.

Between issues #2 and #3, we’re starting to settle into a “wish of the month” motif that’s deftly executed and leaves some room for the over-arching quest to capture Abyss. Action works best when it’s not simply action for its own sake but when the action develops part of the story. Here, we don’t get plot movement through the action, but we do get a fair bit of character bonding between Zara and Bennu that’s entertaining if not unexpected.

The primary conflict in this issue underscores the dangers of not considering the cost when making a desperate wish. I like the concept of applying the Monkey’s Paw danger to every wish in creative ways. It’s fun to see how wild Sandlin can get with wishes gone wrong, and using that approach allows for all kinds of creative twists and turns.

Consentino’s art, again, is some of the best Blackbox has among all its titles right now. The colors are bold without being garish. The character designs are imaginative and whimsical. And the action scenes are full of energy.

Fans of action/fantasy adventures will be very happy with this title.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

Before we grant your next wish and present the spoilers below, check out our DJINN HUNTER #2 review.

We pick up immediately from the ending of the last issue. Zara and Bennu head to the next imbalance where they find a town overrun with zombies. While Bennu homes in on the source of the wish, Zara stretches her combat muscles and dives straight into the horde to protect the villagers under attack.

Bennu locates the wish’s source in a nearby church. There they find a macabre wedding in progress. The bridegroom wished to have his deceased bride returned to him, and as with every wish, the return is not what he had in mind. Regardless, the lovesick and grieving groom is too smitten to realize the damage he’s caused.

Bennu traces the wish to the church bells, and Zara moves to destroy them. When the bells are damaged, the Djinn inside emerges to destroy our heroes. During a particularly destructive energy blast, Bennu throws himself into the line of fire to save Zara and dies from the savage attack. We conclude the issue with the revelation that for some, love truly is blind, a reminder that Bennu is a Phoenix, and the surprise arrival of a very dangerous wedding crasher.

Final Thoughts

DJINN HUNTER #3 continues to set a high bar for action/adventure/fantasy comics with a zombie attack just in time for Halloween. The action is exciting and develops the characters through the battle, the plot tells a complete chapter and furthers the overarching quest, and the surprising twist ending heightens anticipation for the next issue.
