Is It Good?
DISNEY VILLAINS: SCAR #4 cements Scar’s role as an untrustworthy villain and mastermind of devilish proportions, as he should be. Chuck Brown creates a scenario that allows Scar to show you exactly what he’s all about and how far he’s willing to go to get what he wants, so on that point, this finale is a winner.
When last we left Scar, he allowed himself to be brought before Queen Zuhour of the hyenas to strike a bargain- Scar will bring the hyenas food in exchange for the support as an army to overthrow Mufasa. Now, Scar makes good on his promise, but a villain’s appetite always looks for the upper hand, even with his allies.
What’s great about this issue? Scar is a villain. Chuck Brown doesn’t try to reframe Scar as sympathetic or misunderstood. What you see is what you get, and by the time the issue is done, Scar’s story dovetails neatly into the events of The Lion King. In other words, this mini-series did precisely what it was supposed to do – it gives The Lion King more texture and background without subverting the story we already know.
What’s not so great about this issue? Realistically nothing. Brown’s pacing is solid, Scar’s plan is clever in a devious sort of way, and the transition from this story to The Lion King is seamless. Kudos to Brown for sticking the landing.
How’s the art? Trevor Fraley gives Disney fans exactly what they want (something Disney proper seems to be struggling with at the moment). Scar’s designs are classically on-point, the action scenes feel consistent with a cinematic Disney cartoon, and the character acting is perfect.

What’s It About?

Check out our DISNEY VILLAINS: SCAR #3 review to find out how Scar struck a bargain with the hyena Queen.
We begin with Scar having a prophetic dream, guided by Rafiki, that shows him the devastating consequences to the Pride Lands if he keeps on his current path. Scar is not fit to be King, he knows it, and he chooses to move forward anyway.
Later, Scar sends Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed off to their assignments – creating a distraction for Zazu’s patrol – to create a stampede that sends herds of Wildebeest into hyena territory. Queen Zuhour commends Scar on fulfilling his end of the bargain.
We conclude the issue with a double-cross, reinforcements, and a new status quo.
