Is It Good?
DISNEY VILLAINS: SCAR #3 is not bad. It’s a little slow, but not bad at all. Chuck Brown’s script surgically fits within The Lion King’s plot to give Scar more nuance and depth to elevate him as one of Disney’s most wretched villains.
When last we left Scar, he agreed to a meeting with the Hyenas after sparing the lives of the buzzards, Kabeer and Krass. Now, Scar secretly witnesses a Hyena sacrifice in motion as the bone eaters are forced to turn on each other for food. Unfortunately, Queen Zahour’s selection for the cannibalistic offering happens to be Scar’s contact.
Except for the leisurely pace, Chuck Brown’s story beats, character work, and plot development are on point. through the dialog, you can hear the characters as they originally appeared on film. The tentative arrangement Scar makes with the Hyenas fits his personality and matches the source material. And two familiar characters are introduced to bring the story closer to the film.
Again, the minor down point is the pacing. Effectively, the entire issue is one long scene, so you get the classic Disney characters to hit your nostalgia bone in just the right spot, but the plot takes only a few baby steps forward.
Chuck Brown’s script is complemented greatly by Trevor Fraley’s pitch-perfect art. The figure work adheres to the source material beautifully, Fraley’s layouts and panel composition are spot-on, and Di Francia’s colors are excellent.

Check out our DISNEY VILLAINS: SCAR #2 review to find out how Kabeer and Krass got Scar’s attention.
We begin with a gathering of Hyenas within the heart of the Elephant Graveyard. It’s time for Queen Zahour to select the next volunteer to ensure the pack is fed, and this time, it’s Shenzi. Scar, Kabeer, and Krass witness the meeting from the shadows as Shenzi scrambles away from his fellow Hyenas to prevent getting eaten.
Sensing an opportunity, Scar announces his presence with a roar. He approaches Queen Zahour with a proposal that will get him all the muscle he needs to take back the throne. Queen Zahour is open to an alliance, but she needs an offering first.
We conclude the issue with familiar volunteers, multiple targets, and eyes in the sky.
