Is It Good?
DISNEY VILLAINS: SCAR #2 continues to fill in the story behind the story with one of Disney’s most infamous villains. Rather than reinvent Scar as a sympathetic creature or simply as misunderstood, Chuck Brown’s script continues to serve as an excellent prologue to the events of The Lion King.
Technically, the plot doesn’t take great leaps forward, but what Chuck Brown’s script does well is bringing in familiar characters to give readers a view into how Scar’s collection of scavengers first met. Brown captures the right voice and tone of the Disney characters, and Brown clarifies exactly what members of Mufasa’s Court think of Scar, laying the motivational foundation for Scar to go down a dark path. It’s easier to accept a person would become a villain when everyone hates him, so Brown gives readers all the justification you’d ever want.
Again, not much happens in this issue, so you may find the breezy pace a little too breezy. That said, the value of this issue is in Brown’s character- and world-building. If you’re interested in revisiting these characters because you love The Lion King, you’ll likely enjoy this issue.
Trevor Fraley’s art is fantastic in this issue. Admittedly, Farley is following right along with Disney’s style guide, but kudos to Fraley for adding depth and texture to each scene. The character designs look great, and Di Francia’s coloring choices are exemplary.

Check out our DISNEY VILLAINS: SCAR #1 review to get a good look at Scar’s life once Simba was born.
We begin with a group of lioness hunters stalking a zebra herd in the tall grass. With respect for the zebra’s sacrifice, the lionesses take down their prey and begin to feast. Scar arrives to eat his fill, and his arrogant tone about his position of privilege irks the lionesses.
As Scar eats, he’s approached by two buzzards who observe the lioness’s ungrateful attitude. The buzzards pander to Scar’s ego by suggesting he should be the rightful heir to the throne. Scar is annoyed by the buzzards, but his ears perk up when they offer a plan to help Scar retain his path to becoming King.
We conclude the issue with insults, old memories, and a dangerous introduction.

DISNEY VILLAINS: SCAR #2 continues the pitch-perfect prologue to Scar’s eventual path to treason, betrayal, and murder. While the plot takes a backseat to introductions and world-building, this issue is a nostalgic treat for The Lion King fans.
