Was It Good?
Wheesh! The DIE!namite collection just keeps getting wilder and crazier with every new arc. In the DIE!NAMITE LIVES arc, the universe-spanning zombie apocalypse featured Ash Williams and Jennifer Blood at the center of the gory mayhem. This time, the Lord of the Apes (well, technically, his descendant) takes center stage for an adventure with zombie vampires, Evil Red Sonja, Vampirella, Pantha, and a zombie dinosaur dubbed Z-Rex. If you’re looking for wild craziness, it doesn’t get better than this.
The key to this series’ success so far has been Van Lente’s unapologetic desire to go big and all out with every issue. There’s no playing it safe with this series, and this first issue in the next arc is no exception. Zombification is not limited to humans, so every beast of the jungle gets in on the action. The violence is so over-the-top, it’s almost comical (*ahem*). The story twists and turns with one outlandish development after the other. And the way Van Lente has introduced Tarzan in this issue makes him an engaging character that doesn’t feel outdated in the slightest.
Of course, you can’t have all the silly violence and over-the-top action without an art team that’s up to the task. Carratú and Diaz continue to turn out arcs with non-stop energy, some cheeky humor via character expressions, and plenty of mayhem.

If you don’t know how the universe got into this tough spot, check out the details of the finale in our DIE!NAMITE LIVES! #5 review.
We begin in the Uziri National Forest where a sleeping Tarzan is awoken by his wife after she spots a spaceship crash-landing in the jungle nearby. If you’re up to date on the finale from DIE!NAMITE LIVES!, you know the combined forces of Drakulon and Mars had arrived to take over the Earth from the last pockets of resistance. Captain Future’s drones had taken out most of the invasion fleet but a lone ship managed to break through the blockade.
Now, Tarzan swings into action to investigate when he’s confronted by scared research students running for their lives against the spreading zombie outbreak, a “Z-Rex”, and an alien landing party setting up shop. Thankfully, (sort of reformed) Evil Red Sonja wielding the Smiley-sword, Vampirella, and Pantha arrive to hunt down the alien landing party. We conclude the issue with gun pointing, zombie stomping, and accidental teleporting.
Final Thoughts
DIE!NAMITE NEVER DIES #1 is a sometimes wacky, sometimes gory, but always fun first issue in the next arc of the DIE!namite saga. The mildly black humor mixed with over-the-top action and violence seems intentionally geared to entertaining readers with every page turn. If you want mindless, crazy big fun, this is an excellent start.
