Analysis of DICK TRACY #7:
Plot:
Dick Tracy #7 begins with the assembled law officers puzzling over the Blank’s latest victim. So far, all victims are criminals who used to work for Lips but now work for Fangs. Tracy’s investigation uncovers a killer who likes to make the victims suffer, uses an assortment of knives, and targets the worst of the worst. When Tracy and Pat think they have a lead with a recently released criminal, they come up empty, but an enterprising young officer might have found the special link.
Artwork and Presentation:
Geraldo Borges’s shadow-heavy artwork and strong use of silhouettes amp up the detective noir feel to match the gritty nature of Tracy’s mystery. That said, Borges continues to shy away from the whimsical character designs that are a hallmark of a Dick Tracy story, which makes the visuals somewhat generic.

Character Work:
Alex Segura and Michael Moreci do a perfectly fine job presenting a version of Dick Tracy that’s as determined, straight-laced, and hard-boiled as ever. Even when Tracy is vexed by the feminine charms of Breathless Mahoney, Tracy is all business.
Structure:
Segura and Moreci nail the basics in terms of focus, goals, stakes, and obstacles. That said, the progress in Tracy’s investigation makes little progress in this issue, relying on clues that don’t seem particularly revealing, so readers looking for a juicy mystery may feel dissatisfied.
Strongest Point(s):
The highlight of Dick Tracy #7 is the gritty, detective noir atmosphere that brings a fresh perspective to the classic Dick Tracy comic strips. At a basic level, this issue reads like a classic Tracy story but with a mature edge.
Weakest Point(s):
As noted above, the weak points are the lack of Tracy’s hallmarks in the visuals and the soft progress on the central mystery. If this was a transition issue, these weak points would be less concerning.
Final Thoughts:

DICK TRACY #7 takes the mystery of the Blanks killings to deep dark places as Dick Tracy gets closer to the killer’s identity. Alex Segura and Michael Moreci’s moody, atmospheric issue pushes Dick Tracy to a breaking point through exhaustion and demoralizing revelations.
