Analysis of DICK TRACY #6:

Plot:

Dick Tracy and his allies begin a hunt for the mysterious Blank, a psychotic killer dressed in white and a face mask who is killing the men who used to work for Lips Manlis. The new boss in town, Fangs Foreman, may be behind it all, but the pieces Tracy collects fit a different puzzle.

Artwork and Presentation:

Geraldo Borges leans into the dark shadows and dark, damp streets of a crime-ridden city to set the stage for a killer on the loose, evoking a Jack the Ripper in London vibe. That said, the criticism we noted in previous reviews still holds in that Borges hasn’t embraced the exaggerated character designs that are core to Dick Tracy’s stories. For example, why would an artist present a new character named Fangs Foreman who doesn’t have fangs?

Character Work:

Alex Segura and Michael Moreci take the standard detective noir mystery up a few notches by injecting more than one interpersonal distraction for Dick Tracy on the romance front. First, Dick and Tess Trueheart struggle with taking the first step into a relationship when their respective careers come first. Second, Dick finds himself instantly drawn to the new femme fatale in town – Breathless Mahoney.

Pacing:

Segura and Moreci start the issue on a brisk note when an innocent citizen walks in on the Blank finishing bloody work on his latest victim. The energy stays up for the rest of the issue.

Strongest Point(s):

The growing sense of dread created by the Blank’s brutal murders instills a layer of tension that keeps the comic engaging. Further, the interpersonal conflict between Dick’s multiple potential love interests adds welcome drama to an already dramatic story.

Weakest Point(s):

The last act of the comic finds Tess at the mercy of the Blank on a lonely side street, but the choreography of the sequence of events that follow, from Dick’s arrival to the discovery of a new body to the assault on a police officer, doesn’t flow well.

Final Thoughts:

DICK TRACY #6 begins a new murder mystery for the city’s greatest detective. Alex Segura and Michael Moreci deliver a pitch-perfect detective noir thriller, and Geraldo Borges’s grim setting creates an air of dread thick enough to cut with a knife.

Score: 8/10
