Was It Good?
It’s a tough read, but not in a bad way.
Devlynn, the main character, struggles with the trauma of being raped by her half-brother. Right off, that’s a weighty subject in any medium. When you layer on top elements of demonic possession, possibly false memories and delusions, and the realization that everything is not what it seems, you don’t come away from this book feeling good.

If we look at the technical execution of this issue, it’s very well done. The art is top-tier, the writing is great, and the whole issue comes together as a well-crafted comic.
This comic looks good, reads well, and is a high-quality production. But be prepared to experience some heavy themes.
What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

Devlynn comes to her senses in the middle of a psycho-sexual therapy session that triggers her memories of being raped by her half-brother. Devlynn isn’t a participant but as the group tries to draw her in, her memories escalate the anguish of her past trauma and the devil inside of her takes over.
The detective who’s been looking for Devlynn after she freed a possessed serial killer, only can see Devlynn attacking the group, not the devil inside driving her attacks. Devlynn eventually wrests control of her senses long enough to realize she can’t trust who and what she sees. Fear grows that the devil inside is warping her mind to trick her into doing what it wants.
Dazed and confused, Devlynn is arrested for releasing the serial killer and assaulting the group. As the pair make their way out of the building, Devlynn’s suspicion that nothing of her past traumas may be real, she realizes her half-brother may still be alive. She breaks her cuffs and struggles to get away. In the scuffle, the detective’s gun falls to the ground and goes off, shooting the detective in the gut.
Devlynn flees back home to Virginia to find out if her half-brother, who she thought she killed, is really dead. She’s convinced when she finds his grave and decides to make one more, dangerous stop.
She stops to visit an old flame, Haley, to find out what else may or may not be real. We conclude the issue with a reunion that’s both happy and sad.
How Does It End?
Haley is both happy and sad to see Devlynn. Devlynn’s half-brother is dead but it’s not what you think. Haley has moved on in the worst possible way for Devlynn.
Final Thoughts
DEVIL’S DOMINION #4, available from Blackbox Comics on MAY 19TH, 2021, takes weighty, traumatic themes and puts a demonic spin on them to make this issue a tragedy as much as a horror comic. The art, writing, and execution are all top-notch, so it’s worth checking out.
