Was It Good?
The story was good. The art? The art is a step down from what we saw in the last issue.
Abnett’s story focuses on Dejah Thoris uniting the warring factions of the Green Nations against the tyrant sitting on the throne of Helium. For the most part, it works really well as a ragtag group pulling off an impossible plan with the slimmest chance of success. It’s the kind of narration and dialog epic war films are made from.
The art here, however, lost some of the edge and energy from the last issue. In some of the panels, particularly where there’s bright lighting, characters look flat and the musculature looks cartoonish. This is the type of art you’d expect to see in a middle-grade or kids adventure book, not in a sci-fi war story starring one of the most recognized pulp characters in history.
What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
We pick up where we left off in the previous issue (read our DEJAH THORIS (VOL. 3) #10 review to get caught up), with Dejah confronting the Thark Jeddak on the battlefield. She makes a compelling case to stop the fighting and agree to a truce so the Green Nation may unite against the Longborns.
Thuvia uses her psychic powers, with a boost from Marohk, to link Dejah with the Jeddak to prove she is right and to show him a vision of the Longborns. This gambit was a longshot when the plan was first discussed the last issue, and it plays out believably here.
Two weeks later, Kurz Kurtos and the capital of Helium are under siege by the united Green Nations with Dejah Thoris’s forces leading the charge. In his panic, Kurtos divulges to his first in command, Dwar Morkal, that he needs help from his secret allies, the Zodanga. Jeddara Than appears to offer aid, much to Dwar’s disgust as Helium and Zodanga have been feuding for generations. This secret alliance is seen by Dwar as a betrayal to Helium’s people.
During the chaos outside the Helium walls, Dejah takes a small team into Helium via secret tunnels known only to the royal family. Tars Tarkas is amazed that such tunnels exist, but they have no time to dwell as they make their way to the throne room to ambush Kurtos.
Without spoiling the ending, Dwar loses his head over the secret help Kurtos has been receiving from Zodanga, Jeddara Than’s holographic projection is very special, and help is on the way.
Final Thoughts
DEJAH THORIS (VOL. 3) #11, available from Dynamite Comics on March 24th, 2021, is a fast-paced war story that suffers from art more suited for a children’s book. There’s enough in this issue to warrant coming back, but this isn’t the best entry in the series.
Score: 6.5/10
