Is It Good?

File this one under the heading of “amusing horror,” if such a category exists. DEADFELLOWS #1 is a quirky start to a tale about a loser, Pete, who moves into a new apartment after breaking up with his girlfriend. When Pete’s life grows increasingly hopeless, his thoughts turn to suicide, but the ghosts taking up space in his apartment are steadfastly against taking up another spirit. Thus begins the most unusual roommate squabble you’ve ever read.

Kody Hamilton’s story takes a while to get going, but once the story’s plot starts moving, it exudes a quirky charm. Hamilton paints Pete as pathetically as possible to gain the reader’s sympathy, but not so pathetic that you’re okay with letting him pass on to the Great Beyond. The ghosts in this story are an eclectic bunch of offbeat personalities who each have a story waiting to be told. In short, the premise delivers tons of potential.

That said, the down point of Hamilton’s script is the amount of time it takes to get going. If you go into this comic cold, you’d have almost no idea what the story is about until you get past the midpoint. World- and character-building is necessary for a new story, but the first half could be tightened up in spots.

A good bit of credit for the comic’s quirky charm is due to Borrallo’s art style. Borrallo gives the unique group distinctive looks, the panel compositions help with the comedic moments, and the coloring punctuates the mood in each panel.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

We’re immediately introduced to Pete as he moves into his new apartment. The landlord fails to disclose there have been several deaths in the apartment over the years, all due to suicide. Pete, suffering through a low point in his life, may be the next death in the apartment.

Later, Pete’s life turns from bad to worse as anyone he knows or cares about, except his Mom, walks away from Pete’s anti-social antics. One night, Pete carelessly takes too many pain pills, and a woman suddenly appears in his apartment to force him to vomit it all up.

Pete soon learns the mystery woman died many years ago. We conclude the issue with priestly help, a forced viewing, and the first of many squabbles.

Final Thoughts

DEADFELLOWS #1 is an oddly quirky and ultimately amusing horror comedy about a living loser butting heads with his dead roommates. The script’s charm is enhanced by the complementary artwork, and the ending promises more fun in the next issue. That said, the first half takes a little too long to get going, so don’t give up on it until after the midpoint.
