Is DEAD KINGDOM (VOL. 2) #2 Good?

In the last issue, Kain and Alice had a heartwarming reunion. But they realized they couldn’t just stay safe in their fort while a zombie plague and some mysterious dark forces ravaged the land. They teamed up with Jeremiah and a few others to track down the source of this whole mess and try to find a way to stop it. Their journey took a dangerous turn at the end of the issue as they were surrounded by a massive zombie horde.

DEAD KINGDOM (VOL. 2) #2 starts with Kain and Jeremiah fighting their way through the relentless zombies, trying to clear a path for the rest of the group to escape. Just as it seems like they might be separated again, Alice’s grief and fear trigger a crazy burst of power. She unleashes lightning and thunder from her magical necklace and blasts the zombies to dust! Everyone’s shocked, including Alice.

That evening, Alice explains she’s an “ancestor,” a descendant of a powerful magical race from a place called Khataras, which existed long before their current time. She starts to tell the story of her people. Meanwhile, that huge power surge from Alice has alerted the dark lord behind the zombie plague. He recognizes the energy signature as something ancient, linked to Khataras…and now he’s hunting for Kain and Alice! The issue ends with a cool splash page showing an elf-like figure from Alice’s stories riding a flying dragon.

This issue is jam-packed with world-building information and seriously raises the stakes. Alice’s power reveal and the bits she shares about the past show that this is way more than a simple zombie survival story. There’s a much bigger, more magical conflict brewing.

What we liked about Dead Kingdom Volume 2 #2

  • The Raised Stakes: Alice’s hidden power and the background lore she introduces make this feel huge. It’s gone from gritty survival to a fantasy epic with a centuries-old magical conflict.
  • World-Building: We’re so curious to see how this plays out. Now that the dark lord is tracking Alice, it changes the whole dynamic from just surviving the plague.
  • Fantasy Vibes: The hints of ancestors, elves, and dragons put us firmly in exciting Dungeons and Dragons territory! The world feels much bigger and more interesting.

What we didn’t like about Dead Kingdom Volume 2 #2

  • Mysterious Villain: We’re two volumes in now, and we still know next to nothing about the evil force behind it all. What’s his motivation, his history? The slow-burn is getting a bit frustrating.

Art Quality

Etienne’s art is seriously cool. The dramatic shadows, thick outlines, and those glowing eyes give it a really striking, old-school woodcut feel. It works perfectly for the story. Plus, the emotional scenes between Kane and Alice are beautifully done.
