Is It Good?

DEAD KINGDOM #2 is another successful entry in the Dark Ages zombie apocalypse that takes Kain on a rollercoaster of survival as he’s confronted with undead and human enemies alike.

It’s almost a given at this point that people reacting to fear and pressure can become very dangerous. A staple of modern zombie tales is the escalating threat humans can pose toward each other; a threat more dangerous than the zombies. Here, Derepentigny brings that staple to the froe as Kain makes friends and enemies during his long trek back to his home to find Alice. After days of walking and fighting, all it takes is one overzealous soldier to end it all.

The premise is clear and straightforward, and Derepentigny builds on the premise to create scenes of human emotion where good people desperately do the right thing while unkind people make life harder. Derepentigny’s strength lies in his ability to make the characters feel real, grounded, and authentic. The dangerous situations don’t feel forced or contrived, so it’s easy to get pulled into a world on the verge of collapse because you believe the character’s motivations and actions.

Paired perfectly with Derepentigny’s writing is Derepentigny’s art. The character designs are distinctive, Derepentigny has a solid grasp of facial acting to convey the character’s thoughts and feelings, and the action is well-choreographed.

Check out our DEAD KINGDOM #1 review to find out how Kain was taken far from home.

We begin with Kain waking up after sustaining serious injuries during the zombie attack on his squad. He was found by a man named Jeremiah who tended his wounds for the last four days. After another day of rest, Jeremiah agrees to accompany Kain back to his home village.

When Kain arrives home, he finds most of the villagers gone. Suddenly, Kain hears shouting and sees a few familiar faces shouting for help. Kain finds a few survivors fighting zombies inside an inn. Kain and Jeremiah intervene, but before they can leave, the inn is set ablaze by soldiers sent to purge the village.

We conclude the issue with desperate plans, good news, and bad news.

DEAD KINGDOM #2 is a rock-solid sophomore issue in the series where Kain is forced to fight humans who have become just as dangerous as the zombies through fear and panic. The characters feel authentic, the action is well-paced and choreographed, and the ending packs an intriguing punch.
