Is DEAD DETECTIVE #3 Good?

In issue #2, Detective Falls found himself in the Land of the Dead, Asphodel, thanks to a magical staircase. He reunited with his deceased partner, Rex Danto. Things got hairy when a demon gangster attacked, and Rex was…well, partially devoured. A mystic patched Rex back together, using…alternative parts.

Picking up in DEAD DETECTIVE #3, Rex (now Franken-Rex?) is revived with magical healing. He gets Detective Falls a badge and gun, welcoming him to the Asphodel police force. Their first stop? Detective Giallo, a tough cop who tasks Falls with spying on Rex.

Meanwhile, in the living world, Mrs. Falls searches for her missing husband.

If you’re struggling to get a handle on the tone and vibe of this series, Dead Heat (1988) has a similar vibe to this comic. Both feature cops, one alive and one undead, working together in a strange situation.

What did we like about DEAD DETECTIVE #3?

Generally, we enjoy the chemistry between Falls and Rex. The world-building is interesting, detailing how the afterlife police function. It’s a unique twist on familiar police procedures.

What didn’t we like about DEAD DETECTIVE #3?

While the world-building is praiseworthy, the plot is lacking. Heyoka’s plot has no clear direction or goal for the characters. Falls doesn’t seem actively trying to return to the living, and Rex’s motives are unclear as well. The story feels stalled.

How’s the Art?

Generally, Fabio Lima Jansen’s art is quite good with interesting demon designs, imaginative settings for the Land of the Dead, and atmospheric use of light and shadow.

DEAD DETECTIVE #3 s a mixed bag. The world-building and character interactions are entertaining, but the lack of a clear plot direction holds it back.

Score: 7/10
