Is It Good?

Yes, DARKWING DUCK #7 is perfectly fine. Among the pantheon of villains and catastrophes Darkwing Duck (DW) has ever faced, there is none more persistent or more personal than DW’s ego. Therefore, Amanda Deibert chose wisely in setting up a mystery that starts with DW getting attacked in his weakest spot.

Deibert’s script centers on a visit to the newly unveiled Hall of Heroes by DW and Launchpad. As the tour progresses, DW’s blood boils at the lack of representation for his exploits. Meanwhile, Launchpad encounters a hooded stranger who seems to have an odd fixation with sidekicks, particularly Launchpad.

What’s great about this issue? Watching DW grow perturbed after perusing one display after the next is somewhat amusing, and when he encounters the Justice Ducks display that paints him as a faulty member of the hero team, DW loses his mind. Neptunia shows up to throw even more fire… err, water on DW’s already “fowl” mood with more bickering amusement. And a thief arrives to create a simple but intriguing mystery.

What’s not so great about this issue? DW’s tour through the museum where he gets perturbed over his lack of representation drags on a little too long. It’s amusing in the moment, but DW’s outrage starts to become repetitive, so the comic would have benefited by trimming the tour to give the thief more development.

How’s the art? Carlo Lauro’s art usually nails the Disney cartoon aesthetic, and he does so here. That said, the line work looks looser and more sketched than normal. You can see the backgrounds lack detail, and edges/corners overlap each other. This issue doesn’t feel as complete and polished. It’s still good, but not as good as the previous issues.

Check out our DARKWING DUCK #6 review to find out how DW’s battle with Dr. NoGood ended.

We begin with DW and Launchpad swooping down to attend the grand opening of St. Canard’s Hall of Heroes. DW naturally assumes the museum is all about him, but he learns better when he’s forced to buy a ticket to get in. DW’s inflated ego takes a bigger hit when he passes display after display honoring a multitude of heroes but none honoring him.

Eventually, DW finds his display mixed in with an unflattering presentation about the Justice Ducks. Neptunia arrives to make a guest appearance, and the two heroes immediately start bickering over who’s more important to the museum.

We conclude the issue with a fleeing thief with curious booty, conflicting attack plans, and an important loss for Launchpad.

Final Thoughts

DARKWING DUCK #7 deals a big blow to Darkwing’s ego and kicks off a new mystery surrounding a thief obsessed with sidekicks. DW’s angst and bickering with Neptunia are amusing, and the mystery is intriguing, but the art lacks a polish, and DW’s museum tour drags on too long.

Score: 7.5/10
