Is It Good?

DARKWING DUCK #6 wraps up Dr. Nogood’s frightful plans to brainwash the fine-feathered friends of St. Canard under his felonious control. Amanda Deibert’s script moves with the speed of flight and introduces more surprises than you would have thought possible, but the number of twists and cameos may be a little too manic for anyone not already hopped up on Pixie Stix and Red Bull.

When last we left Darkwing Duck and friends, he figured out Dr. Nogood was behind the strange goings-on around St. Canard from the proliferation of Natural Organic Good products. Now, DW and Gosalyn race to coral kids under Dr. Nogoods control when they encounter Megavolt, who owns up to his part in Nogood’s return. When Megavolt offers a truce to stop Nogood’s out-of-control deeds, can they trust one of DW’s oldest enemies?

Amanda Deibert’s script mostly works, but it suffers from trying to do too much all at once, turning the arc finale into a messy sprint to cross the finish line. What are the pieces that work? DW is in his prime, Gosalyn’s unflappable determination to join the hero ranks is endearing, there are more cameos than you can shake a stick at from DW canon, the final battle feels big, and the tone/dialog is on-point for a DW story.

Where the comic falls short is in the sheer volume of twists, turns, red herrings, double-crosses, bait-and-switches, cameos, and more. High pacing is good. High pacing with surprising superhero action is better. But you can go overboard, and this issue goes overboard with Megavolt the ally, then Megoavolt the enemy, then a rescue that turns into a fight, which turns into another fight, which turns into another fight. It’s enough to make a 7-year-old who just drank a two-liter of Coca-Cola and snorted six lines of No-Doze take a step back and say, “Could we calm down just a little bit?”

How’s the art? It’s perfect. Carlo Lauro nails the (approved) Disney look and feel of these characters, giving you the impression they stepped off the screen and onto the page. The (manic) action is fun, and the colors look fantastic. Everything you could want from an adaptation of a Disney comic is right here.

What’s It About?

Check out our DARKWING DUCK #5 review to find out how Dr. Nogood got his sticky fingers into the minds of St. Canard’s citizens.

We begin with Darkwing Duck (DW) and Goslayn speeding along on DW’s motorbike. Brainwashed kids under D. Nogood’s control begin pelting our heroes with Lunch and snack foods. DW jumps the bike off a tall ledge to get a bird’s eye view of the scene, and he spots Megavolt in the crowd. When DW and Gosalyn confront the electric villain, he concedes he helped bring Dr. Nogood back to St. Canard, but the evil genius plan is spiraling out of control, so Megavolt offers a truce and a team-up with DW to take Dr. No good down. Reluctantly, DW agrees.

Megavolt corals the zombified kids with an electric amusement park, one which entices DW and Launchpad with its charms. When DW decides to take a quick ride on the Ferris wheel, he finds himself trapped as part of a secret plan between Megavolt and Dr. Nogood. Double cross!

We conclude the issue with family help, Justice help, and Fearsome help.

Final Thoughts

DARKWING DUCK #6 is a fast-paced, action-filled romp to conclude Dr. Nogood’s plan to brainwash St. Canard. The art is practically perfect, and the plot moves like lightning, but there’s too much going on, making the conclusion feel overstuffed and manic.
