Is It Good?
Yes. Okay, yes. DARKWING DUCK #2 takes everything we liked about issue #1 and gives you more with a little bit extra. In other words, this is a wholesome, fun, kid-friendly adventure that nails the classic Disney aesthetic.
Props to Amanda Deibert for drafting an amusing script about a Quackerjack scheme to cause havoc and chaos with a toy replicator. Does Quackerjack’s plan make a lot of sense? No. Does Quackerjack even have a plan? None that we can tell. But that’s not the point. This story is appropriately aimed at kids. Viewed through the lens of a wacky kids’ cartoon intended to create an excuse for fun action, this issue does exactly what it needs to do.
Here’s where that “little bit extra” mentioned above comes in. Issue #1 received a thumbs up as a spot-on one-shot, but issue #2 takes the story a little further with a status quo change at the end, leading into a cliffhanger. It’s unlikely this series will lead to massive revisions of Darkwing Duck, but it introduces the idea of “cliffhangers” and “arcs” to a young audience. Seasoned readers such as yours truly know all about structure, but a little kid may have no idea what “to be continued…” means, so this series trains kids the right way for a long and prosperous future with comics.
Likewise, we can’t say enough good things about Carlo Lauro’s art. Sure, yes, it’s very likely Dynamite has to stick to an approved style guide, so there’s probably not much room for visual interpretation. That said, Lauro nails the Disney style beautifully.

What’s It About?

Check out our DARKWING DUCK #1 review to find out how DW dealt with the nefarious Megabolt.
We begin with Drake, aka Darkwing Duck, taking his daughter Gosalyn out for the grand opening of the town’s newest toy store. Gosalyn is instantly enamored with displays and different novelties to choose from. Drake is particularly entranced by a Darkwing Duck action figure display… until the toys come to life and attack.
Quackerjack has arrived to test out his new toy replication process. Where once sat one rubber duck, now sits hundreds or thousands of rubber ducks, ready to flood the town under his control. With a quick change and a Superman joke very few people will get, Darkwing Duck swoops into action.
We conclude the issue with a “fowl” ending, a grounded duck, and time for a change.

DARKWING DUCK #2 is another winner in Dynamite’s latest run at Darkwing’s adventures. Quackerjack’s arrival and “plan” are amusingly wacky. The action reflects everything you want to see in a Disney kids’ cartoon, and the cliffhanger ending delivers mounds of intrigue.
