Was It Good?
COVER OF DARKNESS #6 is one of the stronger entries in a series that’s had more than its fair share of ups and downs. It’s not perfect by any stretch and, taken as a whole comic, there are certainly plenty of flaws, but there are enough bits and pieces in the individual threads to generate curiosity for what happens next.
The best highlight isn’t your typical highlight because it’s not something you normally expect in a comic. Every plot makes some appreciable progress, which is a nice way of saying “things are happening.” Zelina’s servitude under Vladimir takes a decisive turn. The goblin ring leader gets a sizable amount of backstory revealed to coincide with the arrival of an enemy. Janus is given a new mission and purpose after his encounter with the Yeti. Readers get a visit to Amazon Island. And Candra comes to the end of the line but is given a chance at a new beginning.
If it wasn’t obvious by now, the highlight is also the down point because this is way too much story to cram into 28 pages. This series is desperately in need of editing and pacing work. While each story thread moves forward, no one thread gets enough room to grow and develop before you’re on to the next thing. It’s like reading a comic that’s a montage of highlight clips. The transitions from one thread to the next aren’t smooth because they don’t have the space to transition, and at this point in the series, it’s not even clear which thread is the main plot or if there is one.
We recognize the art is not everyone’s cup of tea due to its rough sketchy style and general lack of cleanliness, but it suits the material well. The characters are dark, jagged, and dangerous. Hiblen isn’t afraid to get bloody when the situation calls for it, and Powers keeps dark, dreary settings vibrant with excellent variety in the dark blue palette.

In no particular order…
Zelina learns Vladimir has not been a good servant to the Queen of Blood, and she takes advantage of the Queen delegate’s visit to change her fortunes with the help of a Phoenix.
Janus and his werewolf companion are healed at the top of a mountain by a group of witches, including one who happens to be Janus’s grandmother. She bequeaths him a special sword and a new mission.
We get a flashback to the goblin’s history and how his greed led to a kingdom dispute between the goblins and the orcs, killing many of both. Now, his past comes back for revenge.
Candra tracks the werewolves to an oceanside village where she gets into a scuffle that winds up killing one of the werewolves. When next we see her, she sees the working of Hades and is given a shot at redemption.
We conclude the issue with Amazons preparing for battle against minions of the Great Old One, a tournament, and a Count becoming a Countess.

Final Thoughts

COVER OF DARKNESS #6 makes a reasonable amount of progress on all fronts with plenty of gore and monster madness on every page. However, there are too many disparate threads happening all at once, and it’s unclear if this series has a main plot.
