Is It Good?

COVER THE DEAD WITH LIME #3 expands Jack Teller’s history with a gut-wrenching flashback that explains Teller’s motivation behind taking up the Plague Mask. Filled with gruesome violence of the zombie variety and high-pitched tension, this is one of the better issues in an already strong series.

The highlight of Chance’s script is the realistic spiral of desperation Teller endures as he seeks out help for his dying son. Teller’s search deals with the trappings of a viral plague as Plague Doctors are praised for their good work while criticized for profiting from the situation as each of their works requires payment. You could argue Chance’s story draws parallels to the dangers of real-world plagues, and that touch of realism gives the horrific presence of zombies frightening plausibility.

Further, Chance wisely uses the flashback to rekindle Teller’s motivation in his current fight. After months on the road, it’s understandable that Teller would become rundown and jaded by the volume of mercy killing his role requires. By rekindling his motivation, Chance gives Teller a sense of purpose in a series that, so far, has no goal other than to survive.

González and Felitte deliver filthy, gory, gloomy art that establishes an atmosphere of depressing gloom on Teller’s travels. You can practically feel the caked-on mud and slimy entrails with every encounter. There’s nothing “clean” about this series, so kudos to the art team for elevating an already heavy story.

Check out our COVER THE DEAD WITH LIME #2 review to find out how Jack Teller got trapped in a cellar full of zombies.

We begin with Teller fighting to stay atop the mass of dead bodies when
he realizes some of them are moving. The more he struggles, the more he sinks to his ultimate demise. In his final moments, he recalls the events that motivated him to become a Plague Doctor.

Then, Teller sought the help of his doctor and friend to cure his ailing son after the dog bite. The doctor can’t help, and he advises Teller to take his family and run before the whole town is cleansed by the arrival of the Plague Doctors. Out of options, Teller takes his son to the Plague Doctors to ask for help.

The Plague Doctors, at first, offer to help only if Teller can pay an outrageous fee. Teller doesn’t have the money to pay, so he makes a desperate move that could cost everyone dearly. We conclude the issue with a diagnosis, a bargain, and misplaced thanks.

COVER THE DEAD WITH LIME #3 is another heart-rending entry in the series as Teller’s current plight forces the memory of his deceased son’s last days to the surface. Teller’s desperation and grief are palpable, and the art team’s dreary, filthy art amplifies the atmosphere of dread.

Score: 8.5/10
