Is It Good?
COVER THE DEAD WITH LIME #2 is another gripping entry in the plague/zombie series from Jonathan Chance. In the first issue, readers were introduced to a 17th-century Europe ravaged by a plague that creates flesh-eating zombies, and the doctor tasked with curing or killing the infected. Now, readers are shown a day in the life of Dr. Teller. The results are deadly dangerous.
This high point of this issue is Chance’s apocalyptic mood as Dr. Teller steps from one bad situation to the next in a world falling apart at the seams. Every scene makes you feel like the protagonist is jumping from the frying pan into the fire, and then into a bigger fire, and so on. Imagine The Walking Dead without the main cast moving from place to place, and you get the idea.
The minor down point is a lack of (so far) destination for Dr. Teller’s story. Chance’s writing continues to flesh out the world and the main protagonist, but there doesn’t appear to be a plot other than survival. It works for now because the writing execution is gripping, and there’s plenty of information left to unveil about the doctor’s history and the rules of this world. However, character- and world-building eventually need to give way to a plot, and there isn’t a clear one as of yet.
González’s art is muddy, rough, and dour, making it a perfect fit for this story. Much like the underdeveloped countryside of Europe in the 17th century, the skies are somberly grey, the roads are layered with sucking mud, and every character is matted with the dirt of hopelessness and death. Again, the art matches the story to a tee.

Find out how the plague first arrived on the shores of Wivensea in our COVER THE DEAD WITH LIME #1 review.
We begin with a recap of the rat invasion that brought the plague to Wivensea and the early observations of the infected by Dr. Jack Teller. Despite his best efforts, the plague soon finds its way to his family.
Now, Dr. Teller travels a lonely road in answer to a letter asking for help. Without warning, Dr. Teller and his horse are surrounded by zombies, and the doctor must survive sinking mud, flash floods, and falling trees to escape.
Dr. Teller eventually reaches his destination at a house that appears quiet from the outside. We conclude the issue with a pitiful voice, a descent into Hell, and the walk of the dead.

COVER THE DEAD WITH LIME #2 is a strong issue that builds out a world teetering on collapse with survivors struggling to hold on. The mood is dark, depressing, and horrific, elevated by a perfect art style to match.

Why did plague doctors wear bird masks?
The “bird masks” worn by doctors were a primitive type of gas mask. It was believed that stuffing the beak-like snout with medicinal herbs and perfumes would purify inhaled air and prevent infection from contagious patients.
