Is It Good?
CLODAGH #3 is a quick read, but that quickness comes with a steady rise in tension, plenty of action, and a character’s bad decision that sets the stage for dire consequences in the future. In short, CLODAGH #3 is the most thrilling issue of the series so far.
Light on words but heavy on action, Birks’s script takes Clodagh through a myriad of ambushes set by the witch to stop Aine’s would-be rescuer. This issue is the first true demonstration of Clodagh’s battle prowess only hinted at in previous issues, and the action is rendered exceptionally well. Clodagh fights through soldiers, brutish giants, and archers to get to her destination, and each fight imbues Clodagh’s fighting reputation with an air of believability.
The downside of the previous issues is a lack of understanding or motivation for the witch’s actions. Here, that motivation isn’t fully addressed, but the talking dog drops clues that hopefully lead to a full revelation in a future issue. That said, the witch’s motivations are still a mystery, which makes the witch feel two-dimensional.
Willi Roberts’s art is steadily improving with each issue in this series, and as with the writing, this is the best issue so far. The line work is exceptional, the coloring is brilliant, and the action set pieces are exciting.

What’s It About?

Check out our CLODAGH #2 review to find out how Aine wound up in the witch’s clutches.
We begin with the (literal) cliffhanger from the last issue where Aine hung from the cliff’s edge as the witch reached out to snatch her. Choosing death over the witch, Aine lets go and falls to her death… almost.
Meanwhile, Clodagh sets out with her old battle armor to track down Aine. She’s confronted by the witch’s enthralled guards and mindless giants in nearly every clearing. Calling on her training and experience, Clodagh clears the way to the witch’s castle.
We conclude the issue with a bad choice by Aine’s father, torture, and overwhelming enemies.
