Is It Good?
CLASH OF THE CLASSICS: DON QUIXOTE FIGHTS THE WAR OF THE WORLDS is a thoroughly entertaining mashup of ideas, amusing art, and a whimsical tone to put a smile on your face. Mixing two great tastes to find out if they taste great together isn’t a new concept, but this is the first time you’ve ever seen this combination, and it works out surprisingly well.
The highlight of Pinchuk’s story is the near-seamless blend of Martian invaders confronted by a Man who believes himself a knight from days of yore. Don Quixote is no stranger to accepting the impossible is possible and confronting monsters that shouldn’t be, so it makes all the sense in the world to confront him with “real giants” during a global invasion. Pinchuk captures the voice of Don Quixote and his squire faithfully, and their astounding ability to topple Martian invasion ships works beautifully, even when your mind tells you it shouldn’t.
The one down point of Pinchuk’s script is a number of stumbles on the first pages with spelling and grammar. When the very first word on the very first page is a typo, it takes a few pages of fantasy to shake it off.
Koutsis’s art is glorious in this issue. You get a MAD magazine vibe with Koutsis’s style but with a little more polish. The facial acting is perfect, the colors look fantastic, and the action contains just the right mix of stakes and humor.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a Martian invasion in the heart of Spain during the turn of the 17th century. Giant machines with tree-like limbs spread death and destruction along the countryside. When a group of villagers sends out a plea for help, one man answers the call – Don Quixote of La Mancha.
At first, the villagers believe Quixote to be a lunatic, but he soon surprises everyone by figuring out the giant walking machines can be downed with an accurate lance strike to the underbelly. True to his mission, Don Quixote has felled the deadly giant. As time passes, the legend of Don Quixote spreads among the towns, inspiring other men to take up arms as knight-in-training.
We conclude the issue with a wise man who discovers the truth about the “giants,” an offensive charge, and a long trip.
