Was It Good?
THE BREAKER OMNIBUS (VOL. 3) does what every epic story should do – escalate the scope, scale, and stakes with each successive volume. Up to now, Si-Woon’s training has shown promise, but readers have yet to see him put his training to the test. This volume delivers that test (or tests) in a big way with payback against his longtime bully, Chang-Ho, a chance meeting against the martial arts prodigy So-Chun Hyuk, and a chase that turns a relative nobody into the talk of the Murim community.
Geug-Jin Jeon delivers exactly what readers have been waiting for. Si-Woon is the everyman who comes into his own as a hero who only lacked the tools and the courage to fulfill his destiny. The first volume focused on bringing out Si-Woon’s will to break out of his timid shell and learn to stand up against challenges. The second volume delivered the tools of martial arts training through his unlikely mentor, Nine-Door Dragon, with a little help from swallowing the Divine Pill. In volume three, the pieces start to come together, but instead of evolving Si-Woon into a dominating force, Geug-Jin Jeon sets up a series of overwhelming challenges to immediately knock him down… if he forgets his lessons.
Everyone loves an underdog, and Si-Woon typifies the perfect type of underdog story readers can get behind. You respect his character, you want to see him win the day, and you feel a fist-pumping sense of satisfaction when the Murim becomes aware of Si-Woon’s presence and are taken aback by his power.
This is all fine and dandy, but this volume succeeds by also expanding the stakes as the hunt for Nine-Door Dragon intensifies and the world of the Murim clashes with Si-Woon’s modest high school life. Every encounter reveals a new surprise. The Murim are surprised by what Si-Woon can do, and Nine-Door Dragon is surprised by how quickly Si-Woon adapts when the threat of danger is near.
This volume has loads of heart, plenty of kickass action, escalating drama, and plenty of surprises.
Of course, the story wouldn’t work as well without Kamaro’s art. The linework is razor-sharp, the panel compositions and layout are designed for maximum dramatic effect, and the facial expressions convey volumes without a single word.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Refresh yourself on what happened last time before seeing how this volume kicks off with a bang by reading our THE BREAKER OMNIBUS (VOL. 2) review.
We begin with the cliffhanger in the last volume. Si-Woon comes to Sae-He’s rescue after Chang-Ho and his gang corner her at a construction site. Si-Woon has mastered his strength, but Chang-Hoo sees something is different about his frequent target. Before Si-Woon lands a blow that could kill Chang-Ho, So-Chun Hyuk intervenes and sends Chang-Ho flying.
Outside, So-Chun questions Si-Woon about the whereabouts of the Nine-Door Dragon. Fearing his master would be exposed, Si-Woon challenges So-Chun to a fight he can’t possibly win. When the duel begins, Si-Woon is outmatched, but So-Chun is shocked at the raw power and resilience of Si-Woon after taking massive damage. Before Si-Woon is killed, Nine-Door Dragon arrives to save his pupil and gives So-Chun his first taste of true fear.
Later, Nine-Door Dragon is urged to flee with Si-Ho and Alex since the Murim now know he’s connected to Si-Woon. As they make arrangements to leave by boat, Si-Woon encounters more trouble at school. We conclude the issue with a bully’s comeuppance, a surprising chase, and a change of plans.
