Is It Good?

Every issue of this series is a treat, and THE BOOGYMAN #5 is the icing on that delicious cake. Mathieu Salvia’s latest chapter explores Father Death’s desire to exceed his own limitations and become something greater, but his journey comes at the expense of his friends, and his past choices now come back to haunt him.

Everything about this issue works. We see the emotional connection between Elliot and Father Death expand and deepen. We see Father Death’s struggle with regret when he learns what became of his fellow Elders, leading to his present predicament. And we see how Father Death is forced to take drastic action when forces close in from all directions to claim both him and Elliot.

Everything works in this issue because all the elements of great storytelling are present. You get heart, mature themes, layers of emotion, creative action, great pacing, unending dramatic tension, and excellent dialog.

Specifically, around the action and the art as a whole, Djet’s stylized blend of supernatural darkness and whimsy is exquisite. The characters look like twisted refugees from a dark carnival, the action is fierce and bloody, and the mood created by light and shadow is practically cinematic.

Check out our THE BOOGYMAN #4 review to find out what happened to the dog.

We begin with Elliot and Father Death sharing a sad moment as Elliot finally has a little time to decompress and reflect. The weight of his parents’ death hits him hard, and Father Death provides what little comfort he can.

Later, Father Death visits Granpa January to ask for help finding the remaining Elders. Regrettably, Father Death and Grandpa January are the last, and Grandpa makes it clear their present situation could have been avoided if Father Death hadn’t walked away from his friends years ago. In an effort to survive and protect their legacy, Grandpa January admits to making very hard choices.

We conclude the issue with the hunt approaching its end, letting dead dogs lie, and Father Death unleashed.
