Is It Good?
ComicalOpinions.com is founded on the mission of bringing honest reviews to readers from mid-, small-, and mid-sized publishers, so when an indie creator comes along with a project you should check out, we take one more step toward fulfilling that mission. Today’s spotlight belongs to WTF Comics and their Manga-inspired title BLUE GHOST #1. By all accounts, this first issue is brimming with potential for a series you should follow.
Paulo Gutemberg’s script centers on an order of superpowered vigilantes tasked with protecting their respective regions around the world. If you’re familiar with Green Lantern lore and how each Lantern protects a specific sector of space, members of the Ghost Society have specific areas of Earth to protect. This story follows Blue Ghost at the end of his career and the teenager who doesn’t know she’s about to be drafted into becoming the next Blue Ghost.
Issue #1 is typical for the first chapter in a Manga, which means it’s a little shorter than most Western Periodical comics, but the first chapter gives you the essentials of Blue Ghost’s abilities and enemies. The action is power-packed, the scene transitions are super-smooth, and the pacing is lightning-quick.
The minor down point is the lack of establishing information about Blue Ghost and the world he inhabits. There’s descriptive information above, but a good chunk comes from an email we received from the creator to explain what’s happening. Without the benefit of that email, a reader coming in cold will only get a vague gist of what’s going on, so it would benefit the first issue greatly to have a preface page, in the beginning, to help with the setup.
How’s the art? It’s VERY Manga-inspired, so if you like Manga art, you’re going to enjoy this comic. In particular, Pablo Dias helps the issue along greatly with distinctive character designs that draw characters into the story without having to expend energy figuring out who’s who.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a rainy night in 1993. Authorities seal off a building where dangerous criminal activity is taking place. The police officer in charge wishes Blue Ghost luck.
Inside, Blue Ghost crashes through the building’s window and takes on a squad of deadly ninjas. The find ends quickly with Blue Ghost victorious, but the big boss, Shingo Hatsune, is ready to unveil his great plan. Shingo invented a portal machine that siphons off the dark power of entities trapped between the folds of time and space. With the flick of a switch, Shingo absorbs a fraction of the dark entity’s power to become unstoppable.
We conclude the issue with a demonic powerup, spreading the (dark) love, and an explosive ending.
