Is BLOODSHOT: UNLEASHED RELOADED #1 Good?
Let’s recap where we are with Valiant and the related events. Valiant Comics, known for titles like X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, Harbinger, and Faith, encountered some trouble last year and took a hiatus. Their last attempt to make things right was with the “X-O Manowar: Unconquered” series. Valiant set up a publishing agreement with Alien Books during this time, resulting in a partnership for publishing and distribution. This issue marks a return to basics for Valiant, aiming to get back into rhythm after their hiatus.
In Bloodshot Unleashed Reloaded #1, we pick up where the last Bloodshot miniseries left off. Bloodshot is in the midst of a fight with a cyborg-like character, reminiscent of his own past. The story introduces the return of Bloodsquirt, an imaginary sidekick urging Bloodshot to kill. The cyborg wreaks havoc in a small town, showcasing intense violence and gore. Bloodshot ultimately confronts and defeats the cyborg, emphasizing the mature-rated nature of the comic.
This comic reintroduces Bloodsquirt, a unique character within Bloodshot’s psyche, adding a meta-layer to the storytelling. Deniz Camp and Mauro Mantella use Bloodsquirt to urge Bloodshot to fulfill his purpose, but then breaks the 4th Wall to address the reader by urging us to fulfill our purpose to read comics. It’s a weird meta layer that may or may not work, depending on your point of view.
