Is It Good?
BLOODBORNE: THE LADY OF THE LANTERNS #2 is a strange issue in the video game-based comic from Cullen Bunn. A lone priest, drained of faith and hope, makes a desperate last stand against the beasts of Yharnan when they invade his church.
It all sounds well and good, but this issue is strange because it appears to have nothing to do with the previous issue except for an appearance by the Lady of the Lanterns. The hunters are different. The civilians are different. The Lady’s presence is different. It almost comes across as if the first two issues are loosely connected shorts in an anthology.
To be clear, this is still an excellent horror comic set in the Bloodborne world. Father Fredric’s (the main protagonist) plight is heart-wrenching. The monster attack is horrific. The scenes involving the hunters are exciting. And the resolution gives you plenty of bang for your buck. The only downside, if you could call it that, is the seeming disconnection from the previous issue.
Kowalski’s art is as excellent asBunn’s writing. The line work and character designs are sketchy and rough, but that style reflects the raggedness of the atmosphere in Yharnan and the bedraggled demeanor of its citizens. The setting and people look worn out and ragged, so Kowalski’s art style suits the story to a tee.

Check out our BLOODBORNE: THE LADY OF THE LANTERNS #1 review to learn about the Lady’s first appearance in Yharnam.
We begin with Father Frederic, a humble priest presiding filled with scared, starving people in the city of Yharnam. The people want hope and miracles to deliver them from the dangers of the Ashen Blood plague, but the priest has none to give. Rather than deliver empty promises and platitudes, the priest prays for the people’s salvation and leaves them.
Later, the priest endures fitful dreams filled with music that calls to him, music from a beautiful woman whose face remains hidden. Unsure of the dream’s meaning, the priest returns to his congregants for a last prayer. Suddenly, the wolven beasts crash through the window and front door and attack the people.
When all hope seems lost, two Hunters arrive to lay waste to the beasts. Unfortunately, the deadly monsters outnumber the Hunters. The priest, resigning himself to one final act, heads to the storeroom below the church. We conclude the issue with a long-gestating preparation, the Lady’s appearance, and a cleansing.

Final Thoughts
(Click this link 👇 to order this comic)
BLOODBORNE: THE LADY OF THE LANTERNS #2 is an effective horror comic about the loss of faith and what a priest will do in a moment of last resort. The ragged art suits the ragged hopelessness of the church’s congregants, and Bunn’s writing plays up the feelings of desperation. Strangely, this second issue barely has anything to do with the preceding issue, so it feels like a one-shot instead of another entry in a series.
