Was It Good?
Second Sight Publishing has finally shaken off the hiccups from supply chain issues and provided us with a bevy of titles for review. BLOOD, SKULLS, AND CHROME #3 falls into the aging biker gang crime thriller category in the same vein as Sons of Anarchy and Mayans, and it pulls off an intriguing, gripping tale of murder, double-crosses, and revenge.
This is our first exposure to the title, and it gets a high mark for sheer accessibility. Without much background or exposition, you can piece together the different players, what they’re about, the challenges they face, and their motivations. In a world where accessibility is a lost art, this issue has it in spades.
The main character and leader of the gang, Jack, is a hard-nosed tough guy that you wouldn’t want to cross, even when you think you’ve got him cornered. The dramatic tension, through the excellent character work and intricate plot, is outstanding here. The gang is on the verge of catastrophe from external forces and internal strife, and you can feel a distinct sense of momentum as the all the players head towards some undetermined collision. The pacing, the forward momentum, and the coiled tension all work to keep you on the edge of your seat.
The art varies from great to just okay. Character designs, colors and color shading, and the use of blacks for dramatic shadows are all excellent. On the flip side, the pencils/inks are sometimes too loose, almost verging on sloppy. If the linework was cleaner, this would be a top-notch art presentation.

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We pick up from the cliffhanger at the end of the last issue. Jack is on his knees and about to some cranial ventilation when Mike forces his way into the room and guns down the attackers. The would-be assassins are members of a rival gang, the Lake Street Boyz. before one of the Boyz dies, he taunts Jack with the knowledge that there’s a rat in the MC. Jack believes the taunt, spurring him and Mike into a plan to root the rat out.
Meanwhile, members of the gang are off partying at a local club. They discuss the events of the past few days and the upcoming vote to initiate new members. As the night wears on, each gang member can smell something that isn’t right.
We conclude the issue with mike calling in multiple favors, suspicions raised, and motivations revealed.

Final Thoughts
BLOOD, SKULLS, AND CHROME #3 is an excellent entry in the biker gang crime thriller sub-genre. That threat of danger keeps the tension on high at all times. The pacing and feeling of momentum towards a collision feel palpable. And, the art is generally good.
