Is It Good?
BLACK BISHOP #1 is pretty darn good. For comic fans who like espionage thrillers with a superhero twist, this offering from Evoluzione Publishing, Marcel Dupree, and Guido Martinex ticks all the right boxes. Think of it as a Black Widow for the new generation.
Martinez’s script centers on Black Bishop – a super spy sent on a mission to infiltrate the recruiting call of a terrorist group to get the inside scoop before taking the group down. Unfortunately, Black Bishop encounters at least one familiar face during the tests.
The structure of Martinez’s script is clear, concise, and gets the job done, but it’s the details that make the difference between an okay comic and a great comic. Black Bishop’s early days as a new spy for the Board are set up with razor-sharp efficiency, the current tests to join a terrorist group introduce readers to her skills and mindset, and the interplay between the flashbacks and the present work seamlessly. You can tell a lot of thought went into making Black Bishop’s introduction as complete as possible within just one issue.
We’ve said it before – Evoluzione Publishing has the highest quality art of any indie publisher we’ve covered. BLACK BISHOP #1 continues to reinforce that assessment beautifully. Shrivastava’s figure work is outstanding, the linework is super clean, and Mashuri’s color choices and application are excellent.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin years ago with a nighttime HALO mission where a new spy recruit (eventually to be called Black Bishop) skydives into an office building and break into a secured office to upload a malware virus.
Now, Black Bishop parachutes into a different mission. She drops onto a tropical island, along with several strangers to participate in a recruitment test for a terrorist organization. The winners get a chance to join. The losers leave the island if they don’t die first.
As Black Bishop expertly makes her way through the test, she notices another contestant has his eye on her for the wrong reasons. We conclude the issue with deadly falls, deadly bugs, and deadly water.

BLACK BISHOP #1 is an impressively strong introduction to the world’s greatest super spy. The story is rock-solid, the action is slick, and the art is the best we’ve seen from almost an indie publisher.
