Is It Good?
BIG BANG ADVENTURES #19 is the latest weird and wild tale of adventure from Big Bang Comics about one of Earth’s strangest heroes encountering a watcher from space with a tale that could be a warning. Filled with eclectic characters and a quirky adventure, this comic will be a hit for readers who like weird sci-fi with a little bit of wackiness.
The issue is broken up into two parts. First, Vinnie Fresco, the multi-eyed alien with artist’s talents, is sent to investigate the arrival of a new alien known by many names throughout the galaxy. Second, the mysterious alien recounts a prophetic tale of an absorbing plant and the heroes sent to stop it. It’s a story within a story, but the two narratives blend well to complement each other and set the stage for a bigger story to come.
The two parts are delivered by two writers, but it’s a testament to the creative team’s teamwork that you can’t tell when one writer’s part ends and the other’s begins. Carlson’s throughline about Vinnie Fresco brings new readers up to speed on Vinnie’s penchant for the arts and his ability to listen and learn before choosing to fight.
Mishkin’s capsule story about an absorbing plant hits all the right notes for a story that homages classic sci-fi monster films of the 1950s. The monster gets close enough to the line of weirdness without tipping over into silly territory, and the heroes project a confident swagger with a little bit of humor to make the capsule story fun.
Cesar Madarro’s art is interesting. Madarro’s character designs have weight and mass through fantastic contours and shading, and Madarro adds little flourishes through the hair and clothing to add a touch of whimsy. Those whimsical flourishes add a layer of fantasy to the sci-fi elements for a wholly mesmerizing set of visuals.
